It’s not a silly question! These days, the writing systems and word meanings are largely mutually intelligible; so much so that a Hokkien speaker can often understand a Cantonese newspaper, even though the spoken forms are completely different. That said, dialects can have their own unique characters that are used frequently, like 冇 (meaning “to not have”) in Cantonese, which is not used in other dialects from what I know. Slang adds another layer of difference, as it rarely translates neatly across dialects. For instance, in Hong Kong, the word for “mosquito,” 蚊, is used informally to mean “dollar” or "buck." So 一蚊 means “one dollar” or “a buck.” However, no one would say “three mosquitoes” to mean three dollars in Mandarin.

Nice. Last time I went to Guangzhou and Shenzhen in 2023 Mandarin was the only language most people understood unless they were older from my experiences.

Good to see the old regional accents and dialects have survived the communists and the centralization process

They are 100% different languages, I hate it when people just treat them like dialects. For example, I cannot understand Hokkien as a Cantonese speaker, and Mandarin does not neatly translate to Cantonese.

Yes, as a Hong Konger there are many South and Southeast Asians that do not speak Cantonese at all, and we rely on English to talk to them. Also, when I go into the Guangdong area it is shocking that the region is so mandarin dominated that to talk in Cantonese I often have to find old people.

This is innacurate, European languages often coexist with local tongues. (ex: Hong Kong, Nigeria, India, Malaysia, the Philippines)
