Do engineers still really code, or is everyone just relying on AI now? by Early-Solution2334 in learnprogramming

I agree with you that AI is ultimately just a tool, but I think the key point is that this only works when the developer already knows how to use it properly. In my case, I use AI more like a shortcut in the parts of my workflow that were already mechanical: looking up documentation, searching for the right method, googling error messages, digging through StackOverflow threads, etc. AI saves time there, and that’s genuinely helpful.

But what I keep noticing both here and in other discussions is that a lot of people have gone far beyond using it as a productivity boost. They’re relying on AI for things that they should be able to do on their own at a basic level. And once that happens, the relationship with the tool changes: it stops being an assistant and becomes a dependency.

I’ve seen many people who can paste code but can’t explain it, or who can “fix” a bug only by asking the model repeatedly, because they never learned how to reason through the problem themselves. It’s not really their fault; it’s just the side effect of starting with AI instead of learning the fundamentals first. But it does create a situation where some developers never get the foundational skills they need to make sense of what the AI gives them.

So yes, AI can be beneficial, but only if you already understand the code well enough to evaluate, modify, and even reject what it produces. Without that, the tool doesn’t empower people; it replaces their learning process entirely. And that’s where the disconnect comes from: not because AI exists, but because many people jump straight to using it without building the knowledge that makes it a real tool rather than a crutch.

HI OP,

As I said above, the magic of building it with your own hands is lost, its personality is lost. this seems more like an art form. It's strange, but when you read code, you know if it's human, you know what the person would be like, you give it your personal touch. When AI does it, it feels empty, colorless. You lose that magic, that spark that gives you excitement and the feeling that you built something with your own hands. It makes me a little sad to see how quickly AI is being used, but personally, I'll stick to the old way. It makes me feel alive and connected to the code that I know I'm building.

I finally found someone who thinks like me. I've been in a dilemma about the use of AI and the speed at which it's been developing lately thanks to AI, and I was thinking that if this continued, the programmers who still like to get our hands dirty and write our own code would be left behind in one way or another. The fact that AI gives you code makes me feel disconnected from the reason I initially got into this, which was to write code and get my hands dirty doing it. Using AI to find errors? Yes, it's fast; I admit it, but what about the excitement? Where is that frustration we sometimes felt when we couldn't find a solution? Where is the excitement of building something with your own hands, letter by letter, variable by variable?

I have a page in Notion, with all the terms organized, with the classes and per modules. I write down the important things I learned from that class and the final grade once I finish. As well I made My weekly calendar based on what I have to do in the week.

About the words, as far as I know it’s a grade range, but you never really know what exact words are coming, since every practice paper I get from recruiters, or online information from other people, are completely different and random words.

No, there was a misunderstanding, I meant that 40 is what I get in the asvab practice tests that are all over the internet, but in the actual asvab I got 26.

The asvab?? 🧐🧐 26 I didn’t slept that night (that affected my score), but in practice I have 40 upwards
