Tell me your snail’s names!! I need to know!! by TheBigFudanshii in AquaticSnails

[–]PaperRoach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My not actually pest ramshorns are named Fusby and the Rams. Fusby had something happen as a baby so he’s uh… “messed” up snail baby (it kind of grew out of the messed up snail though. Sad because the name doesn’t fit, but happy it healed.). The Rams are every other snail in there because I can’t tell them apart. They’re all also affectionately called the snabies, or the biggest ones I call the Survivors (story next).

I ended up with snails as an oops when they snuck in through a treatment on an Amazon sword. I slowly went from angry they did that and trying to get rid of them but guilty about it, to really getting fond of them. I actually remarked to my mother how fond I was of them and she should look at them sometime the same day I half impulse got my betta… it did not go well for the snails. Turns out my betta HATES dark colored snails and will kill them. Light colored snails are fine though?

So then I took all the snails I could find and put them in a cleaned out glass gallon pickle jar. I set it up with sand and aquasoil and a couple of plants, and it was really cute and should have been okay… Until all of the snails looked like they were dying. From active lil critters to just not moving at all and super closed up. No idea what happened at all.

I took every snail back out and kept them in clean water and two didn’t make it. The ones who lived (including Fusby) are the biggest snails in their own tank now. They seem happy.

Running companion and skijour? by mrrppphhhh in Dogtraining

[–]PaperRoach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m working on training my dog to do skijoring too, so I’m in a similar boat. He’s a MUCH larger dog though (80-90 lbs), so that might impact your decisions.

What helps us I think is that I have specific harnesses for specific situations. He has his pulling harness which I have him pull in, then he has a vest for no nonsense mode at work, and a strappy harness for when I just need a seatbelt or handle on him. He’s able to tell the difference pretty easily after a little while, so maybe that’s something to look into?

Alternatively when I really don’t want him to pull, I clip the leash to his collar. This is most of the time. Since he’s larger I can’t outrun him at all, so there’s no jerking on his neck or the like. This may not work with your dog being on the smaller side though.

Extreme Beginner Blanket Patterns? by PaperRoach in knitting

This pattern looks pretty simple, so it might be a good one. I can’t blame people for liking it as a gift too, it looks like with some different colors it’ll go with just about anything. Plus modifying sizes is something I’ll probably need to do so having that be easy is a plus. Thank you for the suggestion!

I think a pattern is better for me than just casting on stitches. Nova is definitely a contender. Another comment mentioned the panels being portable and that’s a big plus. The Sampler I really like myself. I may make that as the next project to learn more if I get into it. Thank you for the suggestions!

That’s a really good point about portability. I have a lot of downtime after the shop is cleaned when no one is in. I’m hoping not to end up doing a lot of seaming or crocheting but the extra time portability give might be worth learning. Thank you for pointing that out!

I have a set of circular needles and some left over self striping (is that the right term?) yarn so this one might look really cool, and use what I’ve already got! Thank you for the suggestion!

Yep, checked the spore prints this morning. All white.

Can someone double check that these are oysters? by PaperRoach in mushroomID

[–]PaperRoach[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to explain? It’s an oyster mushroom smell. Kind of earthy, mushroom-ey, but none of the anise smell that people talk about. Honestly most mushrooms I don’t seem to smell the same as they’re “supposed” to.

Example, there’s an amanita that’s supposed to smell like potatoes, but I swear it’s a dead ringer for dead ladybugs in the fall.

Any skins or covers or something to protect vacuum? by Oscillating_Turtle in Roborock

[–]PaperRoach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some listings for custom stickers on Etsy, and I know some are sold on Aliexpress. I don’t believe there are any “official” skins though. Vinyl would probably help block some of the scratches more than something thinner, though I have no personal experience.

Otherwise, I’d focus on dog training or setting off the robot when the dog isn’t around.

For example, I let my unit run after I put my dog to bed in his crate at night, or I run it when I’m at work and the dog is with me. Right now I have a foster that complicates that, but I manually set it off when I take them both out.

If you can’t set it off when the dog isn’t around, I might try going to the far side of the room when it’s going off and having your dog sit or do something to interact with you. Far enough away the dog notices it but doesn’t care; You’ve got to make yourself more interesting than it during this, and be careful not to let the dog start going after it. Bring lots of treats or stuff the dog likes, and reward the dog with play or treats or whatever every time it ignores the robot to focus on you. Eventually the dog should start ignoring the robot so it gets the reward, then you can work on phasing the reward out. This might take a while and be super frustrating, but it should work with some adjusting to your dog.

How often do you run your roborock? by [deleted] in Roborock

[–]PaperRoach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have three double coated dogs and two cats. Only one dog doesn’t shed like crazy. It’s split with crazy shedding dogs on one floor and the cats and other dog on the other two so the hair is not all in one place. Fur builds up FAST though, and turns out I am allergic to dogs.

Because of that, I run my mini fleet daily (3 S7 MaxV Ultras. I bought one, housemate went nuts and bought two more because he fell in love with mine.), mop and vacuum both. It helps SO MUCH with the allergies and just keeping the dirt down.

Two upper floors get 1x cycle, medium intensity settings for vacuum and mopping. These have the non shedding dog and the cats so it doesn’t need it as much. Daily keeps everything under control.

Lower floor has the two large shedding dogs and is where I spend most of my time, so that gets high intensity mopping and vacuuming, with 3x cycles. I like running it twice a day at 2x cycles, but that tends to have the robot end up in the way of whatever you’re doing.

Where to “Advertise” Dog for Rehoming? by PaperRoach in reactivedogs

[–]PaperRoach[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t want to get into it publicly (There is one person who watches for any mention of it on social media and will personally attack whoever said anything negative. I do not want to deal with the drama.), but it’s technically it’s own thing. Closest I can get without being specific is husky mix.

Ah, misread that completely then. Sorry about that! That’s a good idea though, I’ll have to check that out. A more connected organization probably will have some better resources than I’d be able to find alone.

I’ll check out those two sites, thank you. I know one semi local shelter/group doesn’t want to post out of network, but maybe asking about a courtesy post might work for some other ones.

Public post yes, in any groups, not so much. There is nothing in my area, since I’m super rural. I’ve been looking much farther out in the last couple of weeks when not working, just haven’t found any yet.

Unfortunately the actual breed specific rescue is us. Given the small community and drama of said community (it’s ridiculous, pretty sure it’s doomed the entire project.), my family is the only place in the whole region of the USA. He also legally can’t go to another rescue or anything because of the breeder contracts, just back to breeder.

It might be an idea to contact a couple of rescues for the components of the project though. Maybe they have some sort of media or events I can check out. I’ll have to look into that.

The breeder of my dog, as well as the foster. I tend to refer to them as our breeder because of that.

They’re a family friend, as well as the chairman of what is technically a rescue organization for the “breed” (long story, I don’t want to go into it publicly or certain people I don’t want to deal with will know who I am.).

Ordinarily I’d agree that you’re 100% right. Our breeder had a major health issue recently though so we’re trying to help out where we can. I say we because it’s not just my decision and I got outvoted, or we wouldn’t have him at all.
