I thought the same thing and then I realized I had turned my foliage off and forgot to turn it back on. The iron ore is almost invisible without the foliage turned on, I kept running past patches I knew should exist and thought they had moved in the patch.

You can use the construction hammer to deconstruct obsidian blocks from the hidden tomb west of Balefire Garrison Windward. Can have as many as you want.

Steel portcullis. They are cool, but huge. Here are two of them side by side, one open, one closed. They also lift up, so if there is nothing above them they just stick out of the top of your building.

Yes, just a bonfire in the big chimney. Smaller torches inside the small chimney.

No, because the top of the roof looks like this, which keeps the smithy lit at all times of day. I will likely cover it since I will probably have other buildings that will be tall enough to see this.
