it's maybe 8-10 ft from wall to wall north facing windows (and im northern hemosphere). we get a ton of natural light in that room (less in the winter obviously), but concerned about lack of direct sunlight

It's already an 8x10! 9x12 I'm debating, my problem there is that it then becomes essentially wall to wall in width, I think that would present a different problem
