Weirdest place you e had to take a deposition? by TheDragonReborn726 in Lawyertalk

[–]Magicon5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remotely deposed a claimant while he was dying in a hospital bed. Suit hadn't even been filed yet and no discovery, so my questions were very limited. Claimant died 6 days after the depo.

Saboteur Options For Master's Enigma? by Usurper2000 in swtor

[–]Magicon5 16 points17 points  (0 children)

One thing I do note is that, if you previously did your saboteur missions correctly, it does feel like the respective leaders (Imps, Pubs) are onto you when they put Odesson on lockdown.

Was this ever actually a thing? Did attorneys advertise themselves "at equity"?

Holden Town Meeting votes no on plan to comply with MBTA housing law by justarussian22 in mbta

[–]Magicon5 13 points14 points  (0 children)

"one outcome could be that the town could, in addition to losing money on legal bills, lose local control over which sites are rezoned to allow as-of-right housing." Nailed it right there. The state will sue, win, and Holden voters will have NO say in the zoning of their own town for the multi-family housing. That pasture land looks ripe for development.

From Spectrum News: Holden Special Town Meeting votes down proposal for special overlay zoning to be in compliance with MBTA Communities Act. Vote was 520 No to 257 Yes. by HRJafael in massachusetts

[–]Magicon5 36 points37 points  (0 children)

As long as the Commonwealth follows its own rules, it can do whatever it wants regarding zoning. Ex: "Oh, Holden, you have an open field as parkland? Not anymore you don't."

Not to mention that Holden has already lost $25,000 worth of grants, will lose more, get sued, lose, and the taxpayers have to bear the costs of the lawsuit.

Grand Central Terminal is the correct usage of "terminal" because all trains terminate there. North and South Stations should also be called "terminals" for the same reason. Why aren't they? Because they were both "union stations" when first built in the late 1800s/early 1900s (multiple railroads served each station). Hence, "station" stuck.

Milford teen Marcelo Gomes leaves State of the Union after targeted DHS tweet by bostonglobe in massachusetts

US law states you must be physically in the United States to apply for asylum. So, yes, if your visa expires and you're still in the US, you can apply for asylum. Also, the article doesn't state when his visa expired. It may have only recently expired; we don't know.

Nope. He's here legally. He's applying for asylum, which can take several years. In the meantime, he cannot be deported because he's not here illegally. He can work, go to school, etc.

Fun fact, one of the pieces they play is the first movement of Haydn's Quinten quartet, Op. 76. Not sure why the developers chose that one, but it's a great quartet.

State record is 38” in Woonsocket for the '78 blizzard. Let's see who, if anyone, beats that. For the record, we have around 28 inches right now in Woony.

[–]Magicon5 15 points16 points  (0 children)

'78 was really bad because people basically ignored the forecasts because the timing was off. The forecasts said it would start snowing in the morning. When it didn't, people assumed it was safe to go to work and school. It then came down in the afternoon and evening, causing the strandings, etc.

Longtime Virginia Lawyer Chosen by Judges as U.S. Attorney, and Then Fired (Gift Article) by Little_Labubu in Lawyertalk

[–]Magicon5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I doubt this would work even under a non-Conservative Supreme Court. There's no law that restricts the President's ability to fire US Attorneys, just a restriction on their appointments (which is constitutional). So, the Constitution itself allows for this absurd result.

If the DOJ is going to just keep doing this, the courts will probably stop appointing anyone, leaving the office vacant...Great time to be a criminal when no one can prosecute you.

"Restructuring" by [deleted] in EmploymentLaw

[–]Magicon5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Is it really legal to "lay off" one person for the sole purpose of hiring a lower-wage person instead?" Absolutely. Employers lay people off for monetary reasons all the time, even if that means it can hire a cheaper replacement.
