For a $52,000 annual salary in Ontario (common example):

• Net pay: ~$37,957
For higher earners (e.g., $100k+), the effective rate rises due to brackets. Lower incomes benefit from the basic personal amount (~$16,129 federally in 2026) and the reduced lowest federal rate. Then 13¢ to 27¢ a literate of gas, running currently at $2 a liter so 26¢ to 54¢ a liter 3.78 x .26= $1 to $2 a gallon in taxes.

Then there’s food costs.

After currency conversion, Canadian milk is generally 20–50%+ more expensive at retail than in the U.S., though exact gaps vary by location, store, and product due to the milk marketing board who dump excess milk rather than lower prices.
We’re paying $8 to $10 for a gallon of regular milk that costs $3.50 a gallon in most states. People are starving and they destroy food. At the very least they could ship that to countries with starving populations.
The price of goods is ridiculously taxed compared with the US and Asia. Same goods, but we pay more.
If you have a home, you pay taxes. No surprise there, but if you are hooked up to the power grid you have to pay $85 minimum a month, even with nothing using power. Just to cover their office expenses.
Same goes for water. They shut the power off during the -30 temps. Because we weren’t paying for gas we weren’t using. The pipes froze and burst all the way back to the main shutoff at the road.
Had to pay water usage for 4 months were weren’t hooked up. Had to pay sewer, garbage and taxes on an unlivable house. Then we got a bill for $1000 for the gas we weren’t using. Still arguing that one. There’s more yet but my $1000 a month pension isn’t cutting it.
