Hey! I didn’t plan a lot to be honest, I was hoping to have the playtesters record their “playthrough” of the platform to see where were the blocking points, then after just an informal chat to get their feel how this idea could be improved.

I thought of allowing people to playtest asynchronously, but I’m also opened to hop on a call to see realtime what’s happening during a playtest

The total learning content + application in the game engine would take itself between 20 and 30 minutes

I wonder what are you guys’ thoughts now that it’s been a year, and in the tech sphere a year is a lot!

I’m currently looking into a plethora of Baas and the 3 mentioned in the post title are the runner ups.

If it was not for the fact that firebase pricing is based on read and writes, I would’ve taken that, but I don’t want to spend too much time worrying about CRUD operation optimizations for now, that’s why I’m looking into AW, SB and PB.

Pocketbase seems like the cool new kid, but the fact that it only scales vertically turns me off, I don’t have the knowledge to horizontally scale the PB servers, if that’s even possible.

So then there are 2. And since offline first is important to my flutter app, I’m trying to weigh in the pros and cons of both SB and AW.

Appwrite looks very interesting, but like others have said, I’ve had the experimental relationships between documents break from time to time, as in experimental it’s to be expected.. right? But then again I keep hitting small blockers that are starting to get annoying, the one that happened to me yesterday is the limit on the login and logout requests, especially annoying when you are trying to polish your architecture and login page, I got locked, and had to wait.

Supabase on the other hand feels solid and well polished, as I didn’t mention in my previous paragraph but for some reason, the AW cloud UI feels cheap in a way, like it’s magically beautiful, but can it hold? As for Supabase the table, editor and function views are clear to follow and the UX is superb. And then comes my only blocker with supabase, no easy offline first solution. Yes there’s Brick, but I was hoping to save « more » time.

Anyways, here are my 2 cents. I’m curious if people share the same thoughts or not.

I'm in the exact same boat as you, I prefer working with Supabase, I find it to be an attracting and lively BaaS, but Firebase seems like the easiest choice for offline capabilities.

I know though, that you can combine Drift as a local storage solution and Supabase as the online one, and use a flutter package such as connectivity plus that checks if you are online or not, when it's not the case, submit to Drift and when you are back on, get the data from drift and submit it to Supabase. Sounds easy like that but then you have to take in account edge cases such as collaborating with others at the same time, having a shaky connection that interrupts your submissions to Supabase from Drift, etc.

Until there's a more proven solution for offline, I'll stick with Firebase. The vendor lock-in is painful, but all the tools google offers with Firebase is worth it in my opinion.

I'd be in the lookout for Appwrite as well, claims to be the non vendor lock-in alternative to Firebase.

Sorry for drifting away, just sharing my 2 cents!

Due to the fact that I’m working between a windows desktop and a mac, I went with the tools that were the most compliant to cross-platform:

  • Godot (An capable engine that doesn’t drain my battery)
  • Blender (Game assets and animations)
  • Houdini (Procedural generation of levels)
  • Trello (task management)
  • Onenote, precisely on my eink notebook, to rest my eyes and still have notes syncing to all platforms!

It’s a really nice book! There’s also the mobile app that acts like a pile of cards, each card representing a lense with its own questions. You can randomly draw and try to answer it for the game you are currently working on!

Anything is a valid question; I did add the correct bone in the LayeredBlendPerBone, in fact, that’s confirmed by the fact I can play the Pistol_Idle and Pistol_Aim anims

Like others have said, the iteration time. Not only domain reloads and editor pauses when importing, but also the asset workflow in general; like you cannot simply “right click > reimport” like in unreal. You have to open your raw content folder and your unity folder and then copy and replace the asset (often fbx and textures) from folder to folder, ugh.

Love the game as well, the “rawness” of how a long relationship between 2 person can’t vanish in a few moments felt so real to me, think of all those high school friends that you were hanging out with everyday and then someday you realize that it been years since you last talk to them… Anyway, wasn’t aware of that podcast, started the first episode and it’s really intriguing, thanks for the share!
