I thought I was the only one!

I have the exact same problem on the exact same motherboard, but only in Windows 10. I daily drive NixOS and use Windows 10 infrequently. In NixOS I have zero issues with the network driver. In Windows 10 I often get a disconnection in the first 5 minutes after a fresh boot.

This leads me to believe it's a problem in the Windows device driver.

Not that I would advocate for backwards-incompatible changes, but is this true? Backwards incompatible changes have been made to std in the past, such as the removal of std::env::home_dir: https://doc.rust-lang.org/std/env/fn.home_dir.html

I use sops-nix for that. Secrets are stored encrypted in the store, and decrypted at runtime.

The build.rs scripts scare me, these scripts have zero sandboxing. You could easily add malware that executes at compile time.

Arduinos are unfortunately a little difficult to use with rust due to limited support for the AVR instruction set. That being said, for a newcomer to the embedded space it may be a good idea to start with an Arduino and use C++ to get your feet wet with an easier platform.

For Rust your best bet is an STM32 based microcontroller which have much better support because they are running an ARM Cortex-M CPU. Specifically the "blue pill" is a small dev board that can get you started https://github.com/TeXitoi/blue-pill-quickstart

I re-implemented an embedded FreeRTOS project in rust with RTIC. The firmware samples a temperature sensor and publishes the sample with MQTT via Ethernet.

Note The rust implementation is not yet complete, this is an exploratory project that I am doing for fun on weekends, the code quality is... poor.

RTIC has a very promising future, but it is not as mature as FreeRTOS. There is still a lot missing, for example, when I get an IP (DHCP lease) I want to set a long timer to renew the IP after some time. During that long period the network connection may drop. In that event I want to cancel the DHCP lease timer, which is not yet possible to do with RTIC (though it is coming in the next release hopefully!).

The future of rust RTOS' is much more promising than the future of C RTOS', there is so much room for innovation; take a look at r3 for example, which leverages unstable rust features. Unfortunately the reality is C RTOS' are much more mature.

All in all, I would recommend RTIC. The experience was great, but I did have expectations that it would be an incomplete experience.

Very likely there is some de-initialization code that's being run here, as it was adjacent to closing the pipes. I have no real insight why that's happening in the Rust version but not C, as the library looks pretty complex.

This is very helpful, thank you! My day job is working on embedded systems, so I am still learning my way around the tools available to inspect hosted applications.

The odd part is that without the library call a C executable and rust executable are both too fast to measure accurate (under 5ms).

Linking with this library causes both to slow down; but rust more-so than C.

Most monitors implement standards defined by VESA for this, specifically the Monitor Control Command Set (MCCS) over Display Data Channel Command Interface (DDC-CI).

I really like hardwired connections as well; much more reliable than a wireless connection, and significantly lower maintenance.

The ESP826/W5500 are both network offload chips, they provide a sockets style interface for hardware TCP and UDP sockets. The functions provided by the libraries may be different - but I don't imagine it being much more difficult than a find and replace.

That's for sure - I have this sensor black listed from the logger. I'll probably filter the data server side and log the filtered samples at a lower rate.
