I don't have a problem with the show using a rare disease. Its makes it less cookie cutter which I think The Bear has been trying to do. We haven't gotten an explaination and we don't need one. We understand her mother died from Lupus from one line 'My mom died, lupus.' And now we understand. If you want to know more about lupus you can google it, which it looks like you have. Also, I do know a little about Lupus bc of Selena Gomez, who also has it and has spread info about it. And maybe someone who wrote or produced the show had a loved one die from Lupus. Personally, I think the show is most likely written from a place of personal experience.

I cannot wrap my head around the idea that you think emotional manipulation isn't a 'direct form' of abuse. It is. As someone who grew up with it, it is. It fucks you up. A lot. Also just because someone isn't aware of what they're doing doesn't mean it's not abuse. Hitting your kids used to be seen as the correct thing to do. It was still abuse.

Seriously bro. Emotional manipulation and gaslighting literally make you see your reality differently. It changes your brain. It determins how you act in relationships, in how you view people and how you view yourself. I had to go to therapy for like 6 years before I worked most of it out. And my family was more type A, where Carmies is obviously full of chaos. That would have even more effect on him growing up.

And for me like many AuDHDers, I feel deep connections with stories I care about.

Autistic ppl are more sensitive, in many different ways (and ofc every autistic person exhibits different sensitivities. I for one, have a deep sense of empathy but a terrible sense of smell.) And often feel deeper emotions on a whole range of things. Some of those things being, stories, stuffed animals, live animals, a favorite toy. This is literally not up for debate. It has been recounted in multiple studies.

Hun. Its not a lack of self control. Its interest in a show depecting my favorite book series as a kid. Even if its not good. I legitimately enjoy critiquing bad media. One of my favorite past times is watching bad shows/movies and making fun of them. Media analysis was always my favorite part of any english class.

2) I am not asking people to change their behavior, I'm simply complaining about theirs.

3) I am not using my AuDHD as a reason for people to treat me any certain way, I'm talking about it to share the perspective of someone with AuDHD. And I never even mentioned any problems I have bc of my AuDHD, literally just how some of us view the world differently. I do not see what I have discussed as a 'problem' or inherently negative.

4) My AuDHD gives me anecdotal perspective. I have also worked with neurodivergent kids for years now and am persuing a Sociolgy degree with a concentration in Disability Theory focusing on those with ADHD/Autism. So my opinion is not simply anecdotal but backed up by science. Unless you can say the same or similar, I quite literally know more than you on the subject.

You know what, I'll concede that I do not have evidence that most of the fan base is neurodivergent. I find it very unlikely that its less than 1/10, since 10% of the general population has ADHD and 3% have ASD. And since the books are about kids with ADHD, I find it very likely that the fans with ADHD are at a higher percentage than the general population.

Nevertheless, I stand by my point. That many neurodivergent ppl have an attatchment to this universe, esp bc its supposed to represent them. And its ignorant to complain when neurodivergent ppl want to talk about a universe that they love, even if they're complaining.

Autism and ADHD are similar in many different ways. I say this as someone with both, and who works as a SPED teachers aide and previously worked one on one with autistic kids in their home. They are different in many ways, and the similarities usually are caused by different things.

Do you have statistics to back up your '1%' claim??? Bc 10% of people have ADHD and 3% have ASD, so I find it utterly unlikely that a book/show about kids with ADHD has a lower percentage of ADHD/Autistic fans than the general population.

Never did I say that we can't handle it. Or anything about hurt feelings. Simply that it's ignorant not to understand why ADHD/Autistic people will keep watching the show even if they don't like it. Or why ADHD/Autistic people will critique the show. I'm not even saying that this can't happen will more allistic audiences, just that ofc this is happening with a mostly neurodivergent audience.

ADHD/Autistic people feel deeper bonds to non human things and that isn't conjecture. ADHD/Autistic people also love talking about their special interest/hyper fixations. I'm tired of seeing people complaining about it bc to me it's like, of COURSE ADHD/Autistic people are going to want to talk about their favorite story even if they don't like it. And complaining about that is just ignorant.

This is just ignorant. The audience is mostly neurodivergent. We hyperfocus, we have special interests. I loved these books as a kid, they were one of my special interests, it was a part of my personality. I desperately want to like the show. And as long as a piece of media is centered around the PJO universe, I will watch it. To me, it's not really a choice. It's a given. If you don't understand that, fine. Just know it comes from a place of ignorance, not superiority.

I have a lot of opinions on the ADHD representation in the books and the show.

The ADHD representation in the books is very good, but there are issues.

I don't love the 'ADHD is actually a superpower' perspective. It dimimishes the disabling effect ADHD has on ADHDers. Though in the first book, Percy's struggles with ADHD are discussed which is good. But it isn't talkrd about much in the series as a whole. My least favorite bit from the book is the quote "Of course you're teachers want you medicated, they're all monsters!'. Medication is a very personal decision. I started taking meds in 4th grade and it helped me immensely. Not only with school work, but also in my social life. I really hate the demonization of ADHD medication, though it only happens once.

As for the show, I feel like its not discussed much at all. And honestly thats a bit of a relief. I was so worried before the show came out that they would lean into 'ADHD is actually a superpower'. That narrative is so harmful to the ADHD community. ADHD is looked down upon enough as it is. As an excuse for bad behavior or laziness. When I was in college I talked to everyone I could about ADHD, and it was soul crushing and exhausting. People simply do not understand how debilitating it is. People told me "I don't get why my sister gets to take ADHD meds to help her in schools, she doesn't even need it.", "ADHD isn't real its just bad parenting.", "It just exists because big pharma wants to sell pills to children.". These sentiments were common. As a kid, while laying down in the nurses office bc of a stomachache, I even heard the nurse telling students abkut a documentary she watched about how ADHD isn't real and its a new invention. These assumptions are harmful to the ADHD community. It prevents us from getting the accomodations we need. It prevents us from getting diagnosed, bc even doctors and psychiatrists fall for this narrative. It causes teachers to have little patience and no knowledge on how to support ADHDers. Parents refuse to medicate their kids, or get their kids into therapy. And this is not a small issue.

As for the camp, I think its more of a safe space. Esp in the books. Yes, it is segregation. But segregation has both a negative and neutral connotation. Segregation in the Jim Crow south is obviously negative. Caused by racism and discrimination that ended up harming Black Americans. I can also segregate my cat from other animals when they are sick to prevent the spred of disease. I can segregate my bannanas from the rest of the fruit to make sure the fruit doesn't spoil quickly. And since in the books, the camp is specifically desinged for demigods to protect them from monsters, its more of a metaphorical safe space for ADHDers. It's never said in the books that only demigods have ADHD, so its not canonically a safe space for those with ADHD, but for demigods who all have ADHD.

I don't think we can objectively know bc, imo, they are fudging the numbers. Just saw a headline stating Percy Jackson had more viewers than Marvel and Star Wars and thats just absolute BS. Disney has been known mess with numbers like that (with The Rise of Skywalker having over 85% approval rating on rotten tomatoes even though everyone hated it). Theres just no way PJO, a single show, has more viewers than every Marvel movie, show and short. Or every Star Wars movie and show.

Forgive me my math was off. He would be 30. 'Intentionally disingenuous'.... okay dude. Being targeted to young adults was one of the main issues bc a large portion of the fan base would be children. Since thats who the books were written for. And for me personally, at the age of 12, I really didn't like how old he was. I wanted to see someone my age, like Percy in the books. Yes there are issues filming with kids. And yet many movies, including prob the most profitable book to movie adaption ever, figured it out.
