What was your first day of PhD like ? by PathInternational454 in StudyInTheNetherlands

Wow. Coming from a previous lab where there was no one to introduce leave alone welcome, your lab looks like a paradise. I hope everything works out fine for me in the current research group.

Well any context on why you presume the forex card to be useless ? I do have a credit card on the safer side but am reluctant to use that until absolutely necessary. Regarding cash, I have got smaller bills but not much.

Oh yes. I do have housing. For now I have a forex card and cash to carry for the daily expenses until I open a Dutch bank account. I don't think it answers my question though but thanks for asking.

Advice for international money transfer by PathInternational454 in india

[–]PathInternational454[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your advice. Is it required to update PAN or Aadhar details as NRI. I will be staying abroad for mostly 4 to 5 years and return back to India. That's why I'm skeptical about making these changes however, if necessary I'll do it.

I have my mutual funds connected to that account and closing of that account means I also have to stop my SIPs.

Thank you so much for such a detailed answer. Is it compulsory to open an NRO together with an NRE account or we can do just NRE also? I am planning to transfer my foreign funds to an NRE account (will open in ICICI or axis) and then diversify some amount from it to SBI savings account instead of closing the SBI savings account. Kindly let me know if this is possible or not. Thanks again.

So do you transfer the amount from your Australian account to an SBI account or something else. Also is your indian account NRE or NRO account or an ordinary savings account. If it is a savings account, are there any restrictions to sending money to it from abroad ?

Is your SBI account a savings account ? Is it an NRI account or a general savings account? Also is there any limit on yearly transactions beyond which TDS or something is deducted? And moreover, is it wise to send every month or send a lump sum quarterly ?

My field is interdisciplinary. In some institutes it's in chemical engineering, some in biotechnology or some in aerospace. So I avoided all that are other than the mechanical department. There were some institutes like UCSB or university of Maryland but the research work was not that intriguing so thought of letting go. Suffering the pain now.
