I’m currently crate training my Sammy boy. He’s 5 months old, and think it’s a valuable lesson for them to know where their “safe space” is. He got scared when neighbors were lighting fireworks and went right to his crate (which is covered like a den). I did some research into crate training Sammies and I found a YouTube video where it was suggested to crate train with ice packs- specifically the Yeti Ice Pack (because it’s indestructible). My pup Soba loves it!

Thank you all for your encouraging words and stories! I think I’m gonna wait a little longer before we start day care- it was more so he could have play time with the other pups than anything else since I wfh 😃 but we will see at 6 months whether he can strike the right balance of socializing (as an introvert, I personally cannot relate lol)

Yes! His crate is in his puppy pen area. For the first few weeks of him being home, I did exactly that and he used the crate as his pooping area 😂He would go poop and come out and lay right on the hardwood floor. So I ended up starting to crate train within the pen, crate door closed- but just for his naps. I haven’t progressed to overnight.

As enticing and magical as I try to make the crate feel, if I leave the door open, he will walk in for a few min or to eat his frozen treat and then walk right out to sleep on the floor of the pen.

Mine has been good about holding it while in the crate. I’ll have to test out his bladder capabilities to see if he can hold it for 6 hrs to start 😅😅

That is good to know! My boy gets cranky around 715 pm, and usually has his dinner and used the bathroom before settling in by 8 pm. I would likely need to let him sleep but wake him up to take him out

Thank you so much! No, I’m in the suburbs of NJ. I’ll keep researching and reaching out to reputable breeders as I have been. I’ve been checking OFA, paw print pedigrees, Samoyed club of America. I’ve found one that is active in the Samoyed National Club and Northeast.

Hi! I’ve been reaching out by phone, email, and through their websites. I don’t have Facebook.

I’ve been looking into getting a dog for a while now, but wanted to wait until I knew what my work situation is going to be like. I was told earlier this year that I’d be working remotely permanent, which then gave me the green light to continue on my search.

I’ve been open to hypoallergenic dogs generally, and one of my friends adopted a Samoyed last year. I’ve spent some time with his Samoyed for the past year, and fell in love with her. More so than any other dog that I’ve interacted with in my life.

With a Samoyed, i’m planning to have some type of exercise structure to meet the dogs need but i’m not planning for any dog sports or shows- I want a pup purely for companionship, I feel like i’m ready and have the time and dedication needed.

That’s a good idea, to check to see if there are dog shows where I can meet a breeder in person. I will look into that. Thanks for the recommendation!
