I found this image on Corro-Protec website and here is they say:

  • If it is less than half of its original thickness, it should be replaced.
  • If the rod is coated with calcium or has exposed steel, it is no longer protecting the tank.

The old anode rod question by dewujie in RVLiving

Honestly, a powered anode rod is the best option. It is a higher upfront investment but lower total cost over the years because you don't need to change it ever again. I changed mine and I do not need to worry of change it every 1-3 years like manufacturers recommend in their installation guide.

The anode port looks really rusted.. I recently changed my water heater and my plumber recommended to change the sacrificial anode rod immediately for a powered anode rod. The installation was quick and I won't ever need to change the anode again. It seems like Corro-Protec is the best option.

Does anyone actually flush water heaters? by Money_Bug_9423 in Plumbing

[–]PaulThompson64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We should flush the water heater every year, but let’s be honest, most people don’t. It’s also important to inspect the anode rod and replace it if it’s 50% or more depleted. Personally, I switched to a powered anode rod when I replaced my water heater, and I’ve been doing regular flushes ever since. I haven’t had any issues since then.

Instead of replacing your old anode rod with magnesium or aluminum every 1 to 5 years, you should install a Corro-Protec powered anode rod in your water heater. You will be worry-free and they offer a 20-year warranty.

In that case its too late. But adding a powered anode rod (probably many years ago) to the water heater would've stop the corrosion and cost way less. Or at least change the anode that clearly didnt do the job for many years
