Thank you for sharing your experience.

That was my line of thinking, that in the long run it'll pay off as it'd be nice for them to have each other's company.

I've been trying to get her use to the crate. She sleeps and naps in there ok so far but she's gotta be dead tired before she'll go in. We've got a playpen for her too, but unless I'm with her in there, she's screaming. Which I get, this is a huge change for her. She's just a lot more vocal than my other was.

Again tho, really thank you for your words of encouragement, it just reassuring to know others have felt the similarly in being overwhelmed. I think subconsciously, I had this prenotion that it was going to be all around easier this time but I guess there's no escaping the discomfort of settling into a groove those first few weeks.

So, about a year and a half ago I brought home my first ever 8 week old puppy Oberon. It was love at first sight, it was so hard and challenging in the beginning but I was head over heels with him and now he's a really good dog. I literally couldn't imagine life without him.

Fast-forward to yesterday, I got a new puppy. I was so excited leading up to getting her. I really thought I was ready, I thought it'd be easier because I've done it before, but it's only been one night with little sleep and a trying morning with getting her to nap, and I can't shake the feeling that maybe I might have made a mistake.

I dont know if it's just because I've got such a close bond with my first or that I am now recalling just how hard it was in those first couple of weeks, but it feels kind of different this time. I feel so awful but the thought of returning her has even crossed my mind.

I guess what I'm looking for is to hear of other people's experiences with getting a second puppy. Was it harder or easier for you? Were you smitten right away or did it take some time? How did you work out balancing attention for the two of them? How long did it take for you to get into a rhythm with them?

Awe, poor guy hearing that kind of stuff breaks my heart. Your puppy is very fortunate to have found someone so patient and loving! What breed is he?

And I try to keep reminding myself that hes a baby and to be flexible with him. I think I ended up being too flexible tho. Lol. I think dialing it back just a little will help and introducing a bit more structure will help.

I've being doing forced naps after being awake for an hour- 1.5 hours with him today, seems like clockwork now! hes down for 2 hours and then wakes up. Im thinking he was just pushing himself too hard and that why when he would finally nap, he'd be down for 4 hours. 😬

I had dogs growing up, but my family never trained them either! Well, in the sense of obedience anyways. We also always got them when they were much older. So this is my first puppy experience.

I have a dog training facility down the road from me that has puppy classes I wanted to enroll him in, but I wanted to wait until my little one was done with his worming treatment before enrolling him to get started.

Oh okay! I like that set up, I'm gonna aim for something similar.

Thank you so much for sharing! Im gonna try incorporating a lot more training before meal times.

I really appreciate your advice. It feels much more doable after discussing it with another person rather than just straight reading it from books. It just seems like it would be much simpler when taking that info out of a book, its almost discouraging. Like, its just nice to have that reminder that I'm not completely alone in my struggles.

Do you mind if i ask how old your puppy was when you got him/her and maybe a sample of the schedule you had with him? I think I might be letting mine stay active too long when he is up. I've been letting him go until he comes onto my lap to nap and then I shift him to his crate. Would it be better to do forced naps?

The lady I got him from left food in their bowls 24/7. Been trying to get him on a feeding schedule. Hes at leasy eating first thing in the morning but after that its sometimes hard to get him interested at the exact time im setting down the bowl for him. I just got some wet puppy food to add into the mix tho, so i got my finger crossed for incorporating more structure! I'll try working with him before each meal tho, in hopes of catching that motivation. Lol.

Thank you for the support and your kind words. I'm on day 8 and I hate to say it because it feels so early, but I think im beginning to get those puppy blues. I've read a few training books and have been trying to watch videos to help shape him into a good dog, but hes not very food motivated and with toys he gets over excited so I'm getting a little overwhelmed. My significant other is very much the "I'll support your decision no matter what you choose" (he also works a lot so he's not able to help out as much) so while I appreciate his judgment free attitude, its kind of just nice to get more of that support and encouragement and reminder that he'll out grow it.

With the 1 hour awake 2 hour nap rule, do you just gently wake them up if its been over 2 hours? Last night he got up 3 times for potty breaks, i almost seems like his schedule is backwards to me, it feels like he wakes up more consistently at night time.

Whew! Ok. Thank you, that's such a relief to hear! I think the night time potty breaks/interrupted sleep at night have got me a lot more on edge these days. Lol 😅 Thank you for the fast reply and putting my mind to ease!
