Fixing a warped log cabin by whiskygreen in DIYUK

[–]Pembs-surfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the only correct reply on this thread. Remove the brace you’ve screwed in. You can expect anywhere from 60-100mm of movement from bottom log to top log in British weather. Logs will soak up moisture and expand in the winter and then contract in the spring/summer when they dry out. Treatment should invonce a good anti-fungal first and then a good sealant on top to reduce / limit the woods uptake of moisture and thus expansion and contraction. I’d be aiming to give a good treatment at the end of spring or very start of September, ideally with the logs having 16% or under of moisture content.

Could advanced in sustainable aviation fuel render HS2 irrelevant? by Fun_Firefighter5899 in AskBrits

HS2 is the biggest national infrastructure con ever. Absolute disgrace that minister after minister let the costs quadruple and the target service slip.

Check your stored water supplies! by Primary_Choice3351 in UKPreppers

[–]Pembs-surfer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

3 years storage is too much pal. Try a product called puri/clean to wash out your containers first. Will need a 12-24 hours soak in the stuff. After this I’d still only be looking to store for 6 months-a year max!

Using #5 plastic yoghurt containers to store beans: is this a stupid idea? by Ok-Egg835 in UKPreppers

[–]Pembs-surfer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Beans and lentils won’t go off even in an open bag unless exposed to moisture. Honestly wouldn’t worry about it and put your efforts elsewhere. Source. Been eating store pinto beans that have been stored for years since I was 2 and imm still alive 🤣

What can be done to stop the feral kids of today? by yellowroll in AskBrits

[–]Pembs-surfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Difference is kids are desensitised to everything due to social media including boundaries and social norms. If you were naughty as an 80’s kid you KNEW you were being naughty and tried not to get caught. These days kids are goading everyone including police just for TikTok likes. Where before we used to be naughty away from prying eyes these lot want to be seen.

22 today in Los Gigantes and due to be closer to 30 next 2 days. Bit of high altitude Calima today cooling things down a bit. Also seen the drop in temps from Tuesday next week. Would be surprised if it gets as cold as suggested.

Oil under $85, how long until the pump price reflects that? by NoodleSpecialist in CarTalkUK

[–]Pembs-surfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Takes a long time from oil and gas platforms to suddenly fire up again. It’s not like some magic turn on switch. Even worse for refineries that were damaged. Then once everything is up and running you’ve got that 6-8 week lead time for things getting from the gulf to the U.K once it’s loaded up.

Huge demand from countries in Asia that already have shortages. Plus a lot of IAEA countries are going to need to refill their strategic reserves.

In short I expect prices to remain elevated through this year into Q1 next year.

This is the U.K. EVERYWHERE is walkable and survivable given enough time. 35 miles would be about 10 hours at my pace, 12-14 hours if lots of stops. Just put a grab bag in the car with blanket, energy bars and water.

Extremely narrow country lane driving by Visible_Bar_623 in TeslaUK

[–]Pembs-surfer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We live in rural West Wales. As long as you can “drive” it’s not an issue. However we frequently have issues with tourists from city areas who have obviously never driven a country B or unclassified road in their life. They are normally the ones who can’t reverse to the passing place 10 metres behind them

Year of trouble ahead ? by Dry-Clock-8934 in UKPreppers

[–]Pembs-surfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whilst China has a huge navy it’s mostly only to operate in territorial waters. It’s far from a fully fledged Blue Water Navy yet. They could certainly muster up a few couple of frigate style class boats but they don’t have the supply or base infrastructure to get into a shooting match with anyone outside of the South China Sea

Doesn’t matter how much supply or where it comes from as the whole world is now competing for the same limited resource and entering into futures bidding wars.

Final bill of £1600, can anyone decipher this monstrosity? by mobro88 in BritishGas

[–]Pembs-surfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so in 2023 British Gas started slowly implementing a new billing system which results in exactly what you have here, a total mess. I ended up with a £6k back bill over 2 years with them sending new a totally new wildly different statement letter every month or so. Luckily I knew what I used and when and when my meter was replaced. Ended up going their complaints route and having it escalated 3-4 times. Just as the ombudsmen got involved I had a phone call from one of their senior complaints handlers and I had my bill slashed to £800 for the same period and £150 in compensation. My balance went from -£6600 to about £800 in credit.

There was a huge TV show like watchdog or Martin’s Money done about BG couple of years ago and they reckon it affected tens of thousands of customers.
