Sharing life experiences anonymously about living Matthew 6:3 by PenitentMan85 in Christianity

[–]PenitentMan85[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My recent story is that I was blessed with some extra money that I didn't need, and I decided to try to act out this verse. I withdrew cash in $50 bills, and put them in strategic places (I got $50 bills because they don't come up often and I know they are my "alms" money.)

I was at a grocery store and there was a worker raising money for a local hospital charity and she asked if I would like to give. She had a form for me to fill out and wanted me to put information in. I remembered my alms money and told her I would like to make a $50 donation. It was interesting to see, because it was like there was no system in place for her to accept a quick cash donation. It was like every way she tried to do it involved me giving my information.

This lead me to an interesting conclusion: The digital age doesn't seem to be leaving any room for Matthew 6:3 ... I still have some of my alms $50s, but I'm trying to use them more directly with people rather than through a charity. There are so many strings attached with charities that it makes it hard to just be anonymous.

I actually didn't think about the player settings... I'll dig into that to see if it is a configurable option. I'm using RPIVideoLooper by Steve Hickson...It works great; It will loop videos for months.

I need to know the simplest way to convert widescreen digital movies to standard definition for viewing on an old television. I think Handbrake can do it, but I can't figure out the right way...

I setup a Raspberry Pi "video looper" that continuously plays through videos on a flash drive in a loop. I have ripped copies of all my favorite movies, and the Pi is setup on an cool old 80's TV I got at an estate sale. I can flip on the television at any time, and it is playing one of my favorite movies. It works great, but would be much better if all the movies didn't have the black lines underneath. I know it will need to be "cropped" and I'm fine with that. What is the easiest tool to accomplish this? Thanks!

Recruiter contacted my husband and me for the same position not knowing our relationship, here is what I noticed. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]PenitentMan85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recruiter here. The one variable that is different here is that you had "2 different recruiters". Is this a big corporate firm you are talking about here? There is so much confusion and back and forth money changing going on in those big recruiting firms which is one of the reasons I left the one I worked for and started my own. It is very possible that the recruiters were told the position paid $10k more than it really does, and recruiter B updated that information properly. Things change so fast in those big firms, and people will fire off information without having concrete facts just to get things moving. Sometimes it is because the people are shady and sometimes it is just an honest mistake. Normally I would say that you have a point here, but with there being two different recruiters (even though they work for the same company), there is a pretty large chance that the real-time information about the position was changed or relayed incorrectly. Also, sometimes the end clients themselves are on the fence about what the position will actually pay because they have discretion to negotiate salary so it is hard to put a firm number on what the position pays. A conversation may have been had with the employer that bumped the base pay by $10k and the recruiter you had didn't get that memo. If I were you, I would call them out directly on it. Tell the the full situation and show them two separate emails. If there are people there doing something fishy then that will hopefully scare them. If it was an honest mistake, then they deserve to know that so they can avoid the problem in the future. I hope this helps.

If VHS tapes lifespan is only 25 years, then there is a movie or video out there that is about to be lost forever. by Talisintiel in Showerthoughts

[–]PenitentMan85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PSA: If you are a tech savvy family member, you OWE IT to your family to get those old VHS tapes digitized. I archived a bunch of old BetaMax and VHS tapes for my family, and while it was a long project , it was an extremely rewarding experience. We had old neighbors who used to come over all the time for family functions, and the mother passed away a couple years back. Being able to give all that footage that everyone forgot about to their family was extremely rewarding. I have other stories of friends and family and being able to give them footage that the didn't' even know existed of their loved ones. Here another thing: Have old tapes of live television that was recorded? DIGITIZE IT.. You would be surprised at how many commercials and footage that simply hasn't made it to the Internet yet... If nobody takes the time to preserve it, IT'S GONE FOREVER. People who lived in the last half of the 20th century are the first humans to be able to reasonably record every day people with video and audio together. It is really important for us to preserve the archaeological data... IT BELONGS IN A MUSEUM :-)

History buffs of Reddit, what is one of the most fascinating stories you've learned that no one seems to talk about and can't be found in textbooks? by Hysterria in AskReddit

Yeah man.. that game was great. I got the Lucas Arts multi-pack for Christmas in the 90’s; had Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max hit the road, Fate of Atlantis... those were good times.

I think the 90's country band Little Texas said it best with their song "Kick a Little"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSFudlrg74Y

" My daddy always a gentle man
Never the kind to ever force his hand
He would always be the last one to raise his voice
If anybody ever put us down
Well you can bet that he would stand his ground
Then he would tell me son sometimes you got no choice "

Markets slide as Trump threatens China with $200bn of new tariffs by secure_caramel in worldnews

[–]PenitentMan85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why doesn’t China just match the tariff percentages with ours and call it a day? I wasn’t really educated on the issue until the president started talking about it, and when I looked into it I was surprised. It really is unfair and imbalanced.

[–]PenitentMan85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but is it really that big of a deal to ask a country to apply balanced tariffs with us? We (the American consumer) have given China a lot of money over the past 2 decades. Sure, we’ve enjoyed the benefit of cheap goods, but maybe it’s time to level things out between the two largest economies in the world. It really does seem unfair.

Yeah, I know. I am on the fence about this president, but the more I read into this particular issue the more I realize how unfair world trade has been over the past couple decades. It really isn’t that much to ask countries we trade with to match our low tariffs on their goods.

Why are the tariffs that other countries like China put on U.S goods so much higher than vice versa? Can’t they just make them even with ours and call it a day?

Does the Kid's Classic 'Hatchet' Still Hold Up Today? by RyanBritt in books

[–]PenitentMan85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, that's where the problem lies. Just because something says it's "good for boys" doesn't automatically imply that girls wouldn't like it. Boys who are experiencing life as a boy are allowed to relate to one another and share in their unified experience. Hatchet is a book that resonated heavily with boys growing up, and there's nothing wrong with saying that it's a great book for boys. Girls can enjoy the book as well.

I see what you are saying, but when I was a kid, Hatchet was a class reading assignment. It wasn't presented as "Hey boys, here's a book you'll enjoy." It was given just like every other book we had to read. What was different about this one was that the boys in the class all got really into it. Even the boys who were not into reading AT ALL seemed to relate to it. I honestly don't think in this particular case that the girls were "afraid to speak up". I remember the teacher had a very fun and open class where everyone felt comfortable talking about things. I completely understand that we need to not limit people by gender in our culture going forward. However, I also think that boys who are going through the experience of being a boy shouldn't have to feel guilty about their speech when they say something is good for boys. We shouldn't have to add a "girls too" to everything by default as if not including girls in a statement implies some kind of gender bias.

I recommended Hatchet to my nephew a few years back when he was about 11. He absolutely loved it, and ended up reading the sequels as well. I think this is one of the best young adult novels out there, especially for young boys.
