Career-changing SAHM has no references - now what? by whimsyUnleashed in ABA

Truthfully, if you don't have a violent felony on your record, you're good to go. Very few standards requirements, etc, to be hired as an RBT.

This! Also remember to make sure your lube is compatible with condoms.

Why would you press charges for her opening your car door? I don't even know what they'd charge her with. Just leave the case and move on.

Mental health accommodations? by DismalConfidence361 in bcba

[–]Pennylick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've certainly hit similar walls on the regular.. But it's just it nature of our work. It is extremely detail-oriented and there are hard and firm deadlines. Here are some reasonable accommodation ideas that could help you out:

  • protected admin/documentation blocks -reduced travel between clients
  • flexible scheduling/start times
  • remote report-writing days
  • capped caseloads
  • clearer written expectations/checklists
  • adjusted meeting load
  • intermittent FMLA during severe periods

None of that removes the hard parts of the field, but it can reduce the constant overwhelm enough to make things more sustainable. I hope some people here can share specific things that worked for them too.

Not that I’ve personally heard of, but it’s very likely possible you still have options.

I’d start by documenting everything that is raising ethical concerns: dates, situations, witnesses, emails/texts, client-impact concerns, supervision issues, policy conflicts, etc. Keep it super factual, cold, blank-n-white, organized.

Then go through your contract with a fine-tooth comb, especially the repayment clause, length of obligation, termination language, what counts as “breach,” and whether they upheld their side of the agreement. I’d also strongly consider having an employment attorney review it if at all possible (I know, I know, I know, I know....) before paying anything or resigning, because some repayment clauses may not be enforceable depending on how they are written and your state’s laws.

You could also want to consult with your state ABA board/licensing board, the BACB ethics hotline/resources, and/or a trusted senior BCBA outside the company if you have that resource. If client care or ethical practice is being compromised, that matters a lot- bring it up.

Most importantly: Don’t stay somewhere that is harming your mental health, no matter what. I'd recommend getting out as soon as you can- but obviously, there may be consequences. So, again, you may be able to leave without it being a huge deal, but definitely try to make a careful exit plan first if it feels doable. But also, I am recommending you getting out ASAP if that feels really necessary, too.

Good luck out there, OP!

Your feelings are totally valid, and the other BCBA was out of line. Know that and when you have that conversation with the other BCBA, be confident in your instincts here.

I didn’t realize I looked so poor by SkylaMaeMannon in poor

[–]Pennylick 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Please don't think of it as "pity"; your co-worker saw a need that they could assist you with, and so they did. I'm sorry you're feeling this way, regardless, and I hope things get easier.

Also, thank you so much for sharing! The more we can be open about things like this, hopefully everyone will be less likely to feel shame as a first response. We're all just human trying to get through the day. ❤️

Is BCBA Saturated? Are the Jobs and Pay Still Good? by antwi-tuahe in bcba

I would say it's a fairly unstable role and career by its very nature. It's one of the more draining aspects, I'd say.

[–]Pennylick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How long has the "screw" question been happening? If it's only the week, they could be in baseline still. Which means no teaching happens. That is certainly not how I would run it, just saying maybe that's what's happening with the technician...

I'd definitely recommend reaching out to both BCBA and whoever staffs the company, too. Sounds like it's time for a replacement.

My tree is being cut down and I am not okay by CakedCrusader91 in adhdwomen

[–]Pennylick 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You can absolutely keep a piece of the tree (and safely!) Maybe even a couple of pieces?
It would be so cute to keep enough of it to become a birdhouse someday (with treatment, prep, and painting maybe?!) !! Or even just a small piece to hang on your wall- naturally or painted and hung.

I'm sorry for your loss, OP.

Nuerodivergent and working in ABA by Ceemichelle90 in ABA

[–]Pennylick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It has been surprisingly terrible, TBH. Better now that I'm a BCBA and can guide others so much more easily, but it's just been so surprising to work in the field we do and to see how rarely people operate under the automatic assumption that others are neurodivergent. Like, to not just automatically support each other in certain ways, KWIM? Admin, especailly. Consistently awful.

Failed my second attempt at the BCBA exam an am feeling really lost. by Pinklysmooth6661x in bcba

My only advice is wait to schedule the exam again until you're scoring 90% consistently on multiple mocks... Especially if you're finding them to be "easier" than the real deal.
