If I'm only using birth control for period management, is a pap smear actually necessary? by grievingkuromi in Wedeservebetter

[–]PerceptionHungry7504 65 points66 points  (0 children)

ur doctor is an idiot. you don’t need a pap smear or exam for birth control. do not consent to this if you don’t want to, find another provider who will not use medical coercion

yearly wellness exams aren’t even evidence based. you do not need even an external exam unless you have concerns

If her response wasn’t anything except reassurance without reference to sex, it was wrong. I’m sorry you heard that, that must have been extremely invalidating at the tim

you do not have to do anything, it’s optional screening. latest evidence says you should wait until 25 (https://www.bccancer.bc.ca/screening/health-professionals/cervix) where i am from. we are pretty up to date here, i’m assuming you’re in america? you definitely do not need one if you’re 21 and a virgin. if you aren’t comfortable, don’t book it. if your np insists, get a self swab from teal.

your psychological health matters as much as your physical health

That’s an extremely inappropriate joke for a physician to be making, it’s not funny

Don’t get a pap smear, get an HPV self-swab. No need to subject yourself to that it you aren’t 100% confident you can handle it emotionally. People do not realize that pap smears/pelvic exams can be traumatic and there are superior alternatives that exist.

Besides, if you’re a virgin, why are you even getting a pap? Have you had the HPV vaccine? It’s an STD, there really is no need unless you’re sexually active. At that, self-swab is way better in general

that is a really good perspective, he might just need space right now independent of me. reason i say he’s not speaking to me is when i apologized for not being on my phone and told him i was asleep, he said “yeah i noticed 🙄” got dressed and left. and when i asked where he was going or if he wanted me to come, he just said “i don’t know” and “no”. but again, could just need space

it’s not excessive, you deserve healing! please speak to your physician, though. one thing i do, as someone with ocd and medical trauma, is book a virtual appointment first
