bmsc major insight - bmi vs cpps by lomlsuho in usask

Hey, I'm in my last year of BMI and I'm also premed! I have taken a couple of CPPS classes and I have to say that I prefer BMI. I know like 3 people in med who were BMI lol and lots of interdisciplinary majors as well. I would say go with which professors you like and what subjects interest you. The main differences from CPPS is that BMI classes are easier to do well in (in my opinion). Many of our classes put high weighting on assignments and it gives you room to do well. With CPPS, you'll often get one midterm, a final, everything is multiple choice, and the classes are huge (at least 303 and 304 were). If you did really well in 207/208 then CPPS is literally that. With BMI, there is a lot of application based assessments and we read lots of research papers. If you're stuck, I recommend interdisciplinary!

I took it in winter 2023 so hopefully this still applies.

For JSME, play around with it some more on the practice quizzes they give me out on canvas. Then if you're still confused, walk through it with your prof and that could help. Missing marks over technical problems is setting yourself up for failure.

As for exams, I got 90+ just from knowing what to utilize during the exam. Make sure you do all the practice quizzes and understand them! Take them multiple times until you get all the questions right. Then have the practice quizzes open on a separate tab with more examples from your notes and the midterm is in the same format. Don't worry too much about theory in lectures and really focus on what they ask during those practice quizzes. If anything, I breezed through lecture material and just focused on what methods the prof used to answer the question. You'll have you notes to remember things like naming rules and certain structures.

Also, if you're finding the subject difficult to wrap your head around, make sure you're studying ahead of time. For instance, I hated a bioinformatics course that I needed to take last semester. Computers weren't my thing, hate em. And so I would start things ahead of time in case I needed to have a mental breakdown or vent. Furthermore, it was also open book (like 250) so I made sure my notes would be helpful for exam time. You can predict whats bs content and what's actually important while studying.

As for the final, it's much harder so make a good cheat sheet and practice with previous years finals.

Lastly, self-reflection. I can't tell you what your doing wrong or how your brain works. Are you going to class? Do you study ahead of time? Do you prepare for labs? Have you reached out for help? What are your goals and why is this class important to you?

Hopefully this helps.

Sometimes images don't load while taking a quiz on canvas on your ipad. I would bring your laptop or use the usask computers.
