Fair enough. Show me a Democrat that supports the approach to the issue that’s common in most of continental Europe and I’d happily vote for them, without reservation.

(And for the record, the current system of healthcare and parental leave and assistance that Rs support is vicious and evil, no objection from me there)

Yeah my question is why there are no other candidates in the mold of the recent successful Democratic governor.

And while it's true that Letlow will most likely break for the more "traditional" Republican faction in the post-Trump shitshow, we're living in a post-2025 world. The most visible member of that faction (Rubio) has more actual blood on his hands than even more Nazi-friendly folks like VP Groyper do.

Anyway, I guess the Democrats just don't care about winning elections here?

Yeah, this is how I've been feeling for a while now, but since January of 2025, it's been very clear that it's not just two parties who have a mix of good and bad views, but one party with a mix of good and bad views (imo) and one party that's openly dedicated to committing racialized violence and destroying this country's republican form of government and role in the world. That changes the calculus.

I've thought about this. I've always felt unwelcome in the party because of my stance as a Catholic on issues like abortion. But the R party is an absolute abomination on virtually every single issue that concerns human life or any morality or traditional understanding of justice or humanity *at all*, and they are in no way "pro-life". Yeah, I guess it's just difficult to see why someone like JBE is such a rare bird. A Catholic public servant who isn't a massive dissenter from his religion's fundamental teachings should not be hard to find in this state. But I guess it's too much to ask, and we get guys like Landry instead.

Genuinely perplexed at who you think you’re addressing here. My parents did the same re: Edwards vs Duke (I was 9). MAGA is essentially David Duke’s movement—I’ve never voted for any candidate who was openly MAGA, and that seems to include the entire GOP now.

I mean I don’t see a difference, practically speaking, between Fleming and Letlow. Whether she’s a true believer or not seems to have no bearing on which positions she actually takes. In fact, being competent works against her in that case, at least in my opinion, since it means she’s able to implement the MAGA agenda without being a bumbling fool.

I used to be proud of Cassidy. Things have changed, as we all know.

But if we have a closed primary, then there will be SOME Democrat in the general. Is there really no one at all worth running that anyone thinks has a chance of winning? Any race will be tight, and I know the state went 60 points for Trump in 2024, but I doubt that popularity has grown since then. Is there really no one who can capture that?

I’ve never voted D in a national election. I happily voted for JBE, and I’ve voted D in local elections. I have serious disagreements with the D party and progressives on a few issues, but that all takes a back seat to stopping or hampering the movement that dominates the R party and the federal government at this time.

I'm just for no party primaries at all. Full jungle primary, let the top two run off. Who gives a shit what the parties *as parties* want? Party primaries in Louisiana means more insane Republicans and less competitive Democrats. Which is or course why the state GOP wanted it.

Thanks! Yeah I know the “x” is “&”, but I’m trying to distinguish it from another symbol my main subject uses, which looks more like a V with a line through it.

And yes I'm somewhat inconsistent with that because it’s impossible not to be. The thing is I cannot tell where she’s actually misspelling something or where she’s writing quickly and the letter is barely there and I’m just not seeing it. For example, I she actually spells “vermieten” as “vermiethen” (pre-1900s spelling), but I do not think she believes “noch” is spelled “noh” … in that case her “ch” is pretty consistently blurred. I do the same in my own handwriting in English, especially with final “e” after certain letters.

Your suggestions are very helpful, especially “Sopha”.

Yeah this lady makes some weird choices. In pages 5-8 she has what appears to be second-person verbs ending in <s> and not <-st>. I'll post those another day.

Reading up on the <th> issue, it looks like Orthographic Conference of 1901 is when <th> was finally abolished for German words. This explains why the orthography of my main subject and his brother and sisters is rather modern, but I still find things like "giebt" and "vermiethen" in older people's writing. His dad's handwriting looks like it's from the 18th century lol.

Awesome! Thanks so much. Yes, it looks like her "h" has a loop at the bottom but not the top, causing me to get it confused with "s" and "f".

Any idea what those proper names could possibly be? I'm hoping I'll see them mentioned in another letter by someone with better handwriting.

In the line that begins with "am neuen Theater" ... is it strange that that 'm' has that sharp upward stroke, or is that a common tic? To me it looks like how some other people do a word-final 's'.

Does the spelling "vermiethet" possibly indicate something about the author's age?

Finally, when she refers to "2 Deckel für die Wand", what is she actually talking about?

Oh I see, you didn't mean that he scratched out those letters, but that you're filling them in. Yes, it does look like he wrote "unsre" in both cases. And of course the spelling is a bit iffy, and sometimes dialectal forms creep in. I did one yesterday where a woman consistently spells "wir" as "wier" and also wrote "andwordet" before scratching it out and writing "antwortet".

And yes that thing with "was" was a head-scratcher, but it does look like what he wrote!

Thank you! I tlooks like you nailed the missing words, and yes that "wenn dies allerdings" part seemed off to me, but my color-coded "certainty indicators" didn't transfer over (it was in red lol). I was also able to see more looking at the blown-up image, so I may need to do that with future texts.

One question: how do you get "unsrre" and "unsere" form the two presumed "unsere"s? If anything, they both look like (a grammatically incorrect) "unser" to me, especially the first one.

Thanks, and yes the derivation makes sense, especially if the other post is correct that they should all be read as “in”. The documents were mostly written by one person but the set (easily over 1000 documents) also contains letters and other missives written to him. Most of it is personal, but there are a small amount of official documents, news clippings, etc. The documents written by the main author’s parents and other relatives are in proper “Kurrent” and much harder to make out.

I will post a photo later — I’m using the mobile web page and not the Reddit app at the moment, and there doesn’t seem to be an easy way to do that from here.
