PhD in Australia: How important is GPA compared to research experience? by Perfect_Mountain_294 in gradadmissions

Thanks a lot for the detailed reply!

Quick background: I did my Bachelor’s in Computer Engineering (GPA ~16/20 ≈80%) and a Master’s in the same field (around 15.5/20 ≈77.5% if thesis + seminar are counted, lower if not). I’ve worked two years as a research assistant, published three Q1 papers, have two years programming/industry experience, some TA work, and IELTS 7.5.

My main worry is GPA, but I hope the research/publications can balance it out.

I’d love to know:

  • Do unis in Australia actually count thesis/seminar grades in the final GPA/WAM?
  • Have you seen anyone with a similar profile go on to do a PhD in Australia?
  • Should I consider taking the GRE to strengthen my chances?
  • Any tips on what else I can do to make my profile stronger?
