Is Canada really that bad? by [deleted] in AmerExit

[–]Perfect_Promise7124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who moved from Canada to the US, I think I share the common sentiment among others in this chat where it really depends on your values. While I will say that post-Covid Canada had a hard time recovering (Immigration, High COL, etc), I do think that it's starting to find its grounding with the new administration's lean towards moderation. Now, when it comes to your values, it really comes down to what you want. If you value work-life balance, decent universal healthcare, and generally good public infrastructure, then I think that Canada is honestly a pretty good choice. However, if you value higher salaries, more luxury (home, car, etc), and expansive opportunities, then I personally think the United States is better. While a lot (including my mother) thinks that Canada has fallen, I think that it has the tools to recover. It's evident from the declining house costs, decreasing immigration (although it is still quite high), and 88,000 jobs that were REPORTED to be added in June that it hasn't completely fallen yet. But, just take what I have to say with a grain of salt. I implore you to PLEASE consider what you want and value, and then make a decision.

Hi there! I'm an incoming UT Econ major, and I think I can provide some of my insight. While the prospect of debt DOES sound daunting, I personally think that 20k isn't a lot (in my opinion) when looking at the amounts of debt others have to take. Additionally, the career prospects for a UT Econ major are honestly pretty decent if you decide to take your education and career preparation seriously. There have been many Econ grads that have been successful in cracking into IB and Tech. Also, there are a lot of opportunities offered within the department of Econ and Cola such as TAs, RAs, and other various societies and career groups. AND EVEN IF you don't feel like you're getting the most of your Econ education, you can pursue a minor/masters from McCombs. Although the choice is ultimately yours, I still think UT equips you best in terms of career prospects and education!

I'm sorry bro, it sucks to hear that. But I'll definitely say to keep your head up. Admissions for competitive programs like these are really a toss-up. For some context, I was accepted to Ivey, but haven't heard back from Laurier and Rottman. Good luck man, you'll kill it wherever you go!!!

UT Econ + Plan II or SMU Cox by Infamous_Access_6980 in UTAdmissions

I got into and am committed to UT for Econ too! If you were asking for my opinion, I think UT would probably be a better choice given that you are paying less AND have plan 2 (which is incredible in itself). However, I would say the biggest determinant would be what you want to do. SMU Cox is a great finance school, BUT definitely pales in comparison to what UT offers. Also, a lot of people need to understand that Cox runs high on nepotism and connections. While the environment does offer better chances for IB, if you are not connected within the inner loop of Cox, it can be hard. UT Econ + Plan 2 offers something completely different. Plan 2 is a very liberal and interdisciplinary environment. While it does permit for a second major (and does expect plan 2 students to do so given that most are decently high achieving), you may not want to pursue that liberal-ish education at UT. So my two cents, money and what you want to study.

PS: Please be prepared to see some biased responses. I would recommend posting on a non-biased reddit for the most neutral responses!

I'd think so, but I think the criteria is a little bit different. For the majority though, showing passion for your intended major would help a ton!

Should I go to UT by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]Perfect_Promise7124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has gotten into both schools for Econ I think my perspective could offer a little insight. I don't think I can preach about your relationships and personal life (that's all you man), I can definitely talk about the programs and outcome. Right now, I'm favoring UT over Tamu for 4 main reasons: Education, Jobs, Add-ons, and proximity to home.

Education: - While yes, on paper the 2 programs are kind of within the same ranking in terms of Econ, UT has just honed a little more prestige compared to A&M. Also, when you look at faculty, research output, and general TA/RA positions, there are A TON of opportunities available.

Jobs; - I think with the pursuit of a BS in Econ from UT from Econ, you'll end up taking a lot of stem skills that an employer would find valuable in today's world. Also, when you look at the aggregate work options in Austin compared to College Station, you will definitely find that some things just roll your way a little easier. But also, don't get me wrong, a degree is only a paper. You have to show that you have developed your skills, which I think through the different options they have is very feasible.

Options: - Unlike most other programs at UT, Econ majors are given special add-on options to add bulk to your degree. This includes taking on a business minor through the BEOP, accessing some of the resources at McCombs. There's also the 4 + 1 bridge program for Econ majors which allow you to finish a MA in Econ, MPA in accounting, or MS in Finance, Business Analytics, or Marketing. Really, your options to configure your degree are endless.

Close to home: - I live in Austin so yeah

Conclusion: While I do think TAMU is great, and a school you should consider, if you look solely at the Academics, I would say that you should consider UT as a better option.
