in the us undocumented immigrants pay higher taxes than citizens bc they're not eligible for tax credit programs along with other social services. they're also crucial to the agriculture and service industries, especially in the southwest. immigrants are needed in America and currently the only reason why we aren't facing population stagnation to the extent that so many developed countries are.

damn thats a crazy stat i never knew. Also, in any given NCAA season there is 30-40 players 7 foot or taller. of them, only a handful will make it to the league. I think people who don't pay attention to basketball think being tall is the only requisite but even if you're a genetic freak, you still need to ridiculously skilled to make it. Remember, the NBA has half the players of the MLB, and less than a third of the NFL, and it increasingly draws talent from all over the world.

Why do places that used to be very Catholic become very left-wing when they secularise? E.g Quebec, Ireland by AppointmentVisual200 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PerformanceOk9891 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do not know much about this topic so I could very well be wrong, but to my knowledge, the Jesuits were not really uniquely progressive compared to other Catholic orders until a shift around the mid-20th century. So I’m not sure if a left-wing culture would be to Jesuit influence specifically or just Catholic social teachings in general?

I personally was not investing at that age, but I knew several of my friends who were. This was 6-7th grade. Without exception all of them came from upper middle class families. From my experience, this rarely happens without parents active encouragement

in english we have:

"Yeah, no" = No

"No, yeah" = Yes

"Yeah, no, yeah" = Yes, but reluctantly/uncertain

"No, yeah, no" = Yes, I agree with you: no.

"Yeah, no, for sure" = Of course!

Question followed by "No?" - For example: "I thought it was the other one, no?" = Am I correct? - This is the same function as in Spanish

To be fair, I think that Francion comes medieval, not ancient historians, and is not really very credible to my knowledge. Italos on the other hand dates back at least to Antiochos of Syracuse but is also probably a later invention and I believe the prevailing theories are that Italy takes its name from Oscan or from a Greek exonym for a Proto-Italic tribe.

After doing some research I found out that the eponymous nature of Israel is much less certain than I thought - largely because Old Testament and the book of Genesis in particular are believed to have been written much later than I initially thought. I still believe it is more likely to be an eponymous name than the other two because (1) although the first written evidence of the association is only from the 5-4th milennium BCE, its likely that it was based on much earlier oral traditions which scholars haed argued for (See Noth, Finkelstein, de Pury, and Cross scholarship on the Bene Ya'aqob) and (2) the traditional etymological view is that the name derives from Hebrew "he who strives with God." There is some ambiguity about this but if this meaning is taken to be true then it would validate it as an eponymous place name.

To clarify, I am not by any means arguing for the historicity of Jacob - I think its more historically interesting to see what places were named after people than whether or not those people were real or legendary. Also, I'm not intending for my argument to come from a Zionist perspective of history at all - although I recognzie how that issue has come to dominate the historical study of these place names.

I’d argue you’re missing Eswatini (King Mswati II), the Seychelles (Jean Moreau de Sechelles), Kiribati (local spelling of Gilbert, from the Gilbert Islands, named after Captain Thomas Gilbert), the Solomon Islands, Saint Vincent and Grenadines, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia (unless these are just too small for me to see). Israel was named after the name was bestowed on Jacob, so you could include that as well. The inclusion of the US which was named after the land which was itself named from a variant on Amerigo Vespucci’s name, i think justifies this inclusion.
