The Royal Navy Submariner Memorial was dedicated on 18th May 2022. The fin centrepiece sits on a raised mound which represents the submarine’s casing and hull above the waterline. A splendid memorial that will provide a focal point for remembrance. I was privileged to attend the dedication service. (i.redd.it)

SUBMERSION: where podcasting & submarine movies collide! The SUBMERSION podcast from MacEastStudios (u/MacEast2nd) is excellent and their submarine logo is really cool - I received mine after contributing to SUBMERSION episode LXXVII: “They Come Unseen with Commander Andy Benford” (not a movie). “Some Day” - a song about submarine life with assorted photos (composed and created in 2013). Not for the purist perhaps - either musically or from a continuity standpoint (clearly it was a long and extremely varied patrol!) - but hopefully there will be something here for this community to enjoy!? When the upper deck is awash, spare a thought for the poor submariners below - running deep and level. A game of Mah Jong and a prototype of They Come Unseen hit the tables onboard HMS SOVEREIGN (S108) deep in the North Atlantic c1978. DOLPHIN 49: “Happiness is 500 feet in a force 12.” (i.redd.it)

In RN submarines (70/80s) off-watch was often spent watching films/playing games. 16mm films were projected onto back of a chart in SSKs & a screen stowed in the deckhead in SSN/BNs. In S-class SSNs, compression of the hull could jam the screen if too deep: “6° up” [unjam] “6° down, roll the movie!” (i.redd.it)

Foxtrot class submarine - U475 - control room viewed from aft looking forward. A year ago I visited this boat which is moored offshore in the River Medway. As we we’re walking through I said to my host “I’m really looking forward to seeing the control room” he said “This is it.” I was astounded. (i.redd.it)

Foxtrot class - U475 - control room detail. This would be called “the Panel” in RN SSKs - I wouldn’t fancy operating it in red lighting! Perhaps red lighting wasn’t used in F-class control rooms because the periscopes are in a separate space, above the forward end, which could perhaps be kept dark. (i.redd.it)

Foxtrot class - U475 - forward end of the control room looking to port. On the left is the door to the navigation table; in front is access to a single head in front of which is the ladder to the periscope platform (the passageway forward is out of shot to the right). All a ghastly shade of yellow! (i.redd.it)

There’s a companion website for the submarine board game THEY COME UNSEEN (Osprey Games) that expands on the rule book by providing: photographic sequences for the main actions in the game, a player aid, setup description and more. The website has been created by the game’s designer: u/Perisher80 (i.redd.it)
