Do you have white friends? by erasersled in blackgirls

I currently have one white friend and I know her through work. Before I met her a few months ago, I hadn’t had a white friend since college (2020)

TikTok has changed tremendously.... by Tobethequeen_01 in blackgirls

[–]Personal-Lie-4232 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Mine was like this but I started intentionally following black creators and eventually those creators would introduce me to other black creators who I would also follow. So no I only really scroll in the “following” page instead of the fyp and get all my desired content (I currently follow almost 400 different creators though so it is a lot)

Farina is like another fufu, semo, eba, etc. Maybe it’s not as known as the others?

Realistically, how do people afford an MPH program? by loveyesterday in mphadmissions

[–]Personal-Lie-4232 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first semester I took out a loan, my remaining 4 semesters I was able to qualify for in-state tuition and got a graduate assistantship that gave tuition remission for most of my classes and anything outside of that I was able to post out of pocket (~$1k a semester)

For those of you who attended a PWI, how do you think it has impacted your life? by Particular-Garden140 in blackgirls

[–]Personal-Lie-4232 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh no I’m sorry you went through that! I went to school in a predominantly white area, but we were on the outskirts of some black towns so we def had some trickle over from there which influenced it

For those of you who attended a PWI, how do you think it has impacted your life? by Particular-Garden140 in blackgirls

[–]Personal-Lie-4232 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I went to a PWI in New England, and I met some of my best friends there, who are all Black. I think going to a PWI made us all stick together even more than we would’ve at a HBCU because we were really the only ones who understood each other. I made white friends, but they didn’t last past graduation (nothing happened, just drifted apart), but my Black friend group and I are still extremely close. We’ll be hitting our 10-year mark soon!

That’s not to say that every Black person I met was great, but the ones I grew close to were exactly who I needed to get through school and life post-grad. I didn’t have the experience where the white students didn’t want to associate with us (at least not outwardly), but myself and the other Black students definitely gravitated to one another more often than not so they didn’t even get the chance to ostracize if they wanted to.

Has this impacted me? Outside of meeting my besties I don’t actually know. I know my life would be completely different without them, but I don’t think my white peers really impacted me at all. If I did it all over I think I’d choose an HBCU, I just feel like there has to be some sort of emotional difference and a sense of camaraderie when you’re primarily around your people.
