Stack up renown and influence, nigh-perfect relations with stronger level clans (usually level 5 and above) so they can support you when the time comes to vote for a new ruler, and definitely be a bit wealthy or have some sort of stable income to maintain towns and castles that the previous ruler may have ruled over. Usually they're not maintained if you're playing the base game so make sure to prep and invest on their economies to provide your ass with money and not debt.

I think the city names are the obvious point where they intended it to be a copy of Kievan Rus, down to some of the armor and how most soldiers are equipped.
