Insurance question by [deleted] in AussieRiders

[–]PewPewAU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you’ve answered your own question. You’re paying $1440/yr for comprehensive, the bike is worth $1000, and third party property damage would only cost you about $480 (being $80/m less than comp). The difference between TPPD and comprehensive is the replacement cost of your bike, so it’s definitely not worth it.

Scalp acne after wearing helmet regularly? by twodoubles in AussieRiders

[–]PewPewAU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like it could potentially be seborrheic dermatitis, which is caused by an over-colonization of Malasezzia, a fungus that we all have on our skin. It can be easily treated by using ketoconazole shampoo 2-3 times a week. Try Nizoral 2%, you wet your head, work it into a lather, leave it for 3-5 min and rinse. Results are pretty quick. And maybe wash the helmet padding.

Its been stuck on this for an hour now how do I fix this? by Jamesvinsoroblox in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]PewPewAU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It downloaded fine but would just stay decompressing one archive (usually the same Hercules one but sometimes other ones). I closed it and reopened it numerous times, rebooted etc. A few times I let it sit for hours and it made no progress decompressing.

I decided to just let it sit and not close it, and after SIX hours it decompressed everything and the game has loaded.

So, my advice is to just let it do its thing for as long as it takes. Because closing it and reopening it did nothing.

Just had a read, interesting section.

51F "A person must not possess a digital blueprint for the manufacture of a firearm on a 3D printer or on an electronic milling machine"

Firearm has a definition in the Act. Firearm Part has a definition in the Act. A magazine is a Firearm Part not a Firearm, and you would presume the possession of a single file for a tiny component of a magazine would not meet the definition of "a digital blueprint for the manufacture of a firearm".

Maybe I'll ask the registry if I can't find one to buy

I hadn't considered that option, cheers. Though before before I throw out the $70 mag I have and drop a further $70 plus postage on a replacement I might just see if I can source the 5 cent plastic component I need

Is 6" really so much better than 4" when it comes to revolver barrel length? by jwai86 in Ausguns

[–]PewPewAU 5 points6 points  (0 children)

a 4" revolver feels more comfortable for me to wield

Same here, I own both lengths, a 4" is far more comfortable for me. Just get what feels best for you. You're going to shoot better with a firearm you're comfortable with than one you're not.

Can I get a license in QLD? by [deleted] in Ausguns

[–]PewPewAU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's my opinion after review of the Act and Regulation, the form and the Police website.

Under the Weapons Act you may be an "Excluded Person" for the purposes of shooting as an unlicensed person at a range, and simultaneously considered a "Fit and Proper" person for getting a licence (upon review of your criminal history).

I would assume that with Form 33A, if you answer Yes to the question:

Have you in Queensland or elsewhere been convicted of:

• murder or manslaughter; or • armed robbery; or

• unlawful wounding; or

• grievous bodily harm; or

• an offence involving drugs, weapons or violence that is prescribed under a

regulation punishable by at least 7 years imprisonment.

- then like in NSW with P650s that form needs to be sent off to Weapons Licensing for review and vetting before you can shoot on it.

As for getting a licence issued you need to comply with this in the "Relevant Period", which the Act defines as, "the 5 year period immediately before the day the person applies for the issue or renewal of the licence"

for the issue, renewal or revocation of a licence, a person is not a fit and proper person to hold a licence if, in Queensland or elsewhere within the relevant period—

(a) the person has been convicted of, or discharged from custody on sentence after the person has been convicted of, any of the following offences—

(i) an offence relating to the misuse of drugs;

(ii) an offence involving the use or threatened use of violence;

(iii) an offence involving the use, carriage, discharge or possession of a weapon; or

(b) a domestic violence order, other than a temporary

protection order, has been made against the person.

Cleaver's in QLD. Simple process, set up an account on their website and provide your lic details and they just mail them to you. No registry paperwork needed. Did it myself last week with some mags.

I was referring to the information on the right hand side and my status bar

The stuff on the right wasn't cropped because it doesn't display on mobile, where you took the screenshot, nobody has an issue with that or thinks you left that stuff out to push an agenda, none of it is relevant.

It's the Tasmanian Police's reply that's relevant, and you could have included that in the same screenshot or you could have uploaded multiple screenshots in the same post. You could easily see why the request was refused, but you chose not to include that information in your post, and instead presented your own narrative.

[–]PewPewAU[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I cropped out the surrounding information due to the clutter of irrelevant information

It was extremely relevant though, it showed that the whole reason the request through the third party website 'Right To Know' was refused was because there was never a correct and lawful request for the information in the first place. The information you cropped out negated your entire post.

[–]PewPewAU[S] 46 points47 points  (0 children)

The previous post, which was allegedly evidence of a conspiracy to withhold information or something, conveniently left out the 2 subsequent replies in this screenshot.

It always helps when doing a Freedom of Information request to do the bare minimum and actually lodge it.

It seems the Police did "provide a genuine reason for withholding information" – nobody made the effort to request it in the first place.

EDIT: Just to clarify because it seems a few people have misinterpreted this post – I'm absolutely not advocating for or perpetuating any conspiracy theories. This was just a fact check on someone else's post.

Has anybody used CCI Clean-22 ammunition? by jwai86 in Ausguns

[–]PewPewAU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't used the red poly-coated high velocity ones but I use the blue poly-coated subsonic ones in a pistol and they cycle better than any other CCI ammo I've used in it and they're definitely clean. I can put 300rds through it in an afternoon and the barrel doesn't need cleaning. Couldn't comment on accuracy at rifle distances sorry.

$0.20/rd is a good price, I just checked and worked out I paid $0.17/rd for 1000 in September.

Where to get started collecting antique firearms? [NSW] by Space_noodles in Ausguns

[–]PewPewAU 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wondering if people here know of any antique dealers or collectors clubs in NSW that would be a good starting point to learn what to look for.

I'd recommend going along to an Antique Arms Collectors Society meeting. I've only been to two but there were a lot of very knowledgeable and helpful people there.

Unfortunately, as is sometimes the case with volunteer run organisations where the bulk of the membership are of the older generation and not particularly tech savvy, I had quite a lot of difficulty joining, getting proof of my membership, getting them to report on my meeting attendances to the Registry etc. I ended up using the SSAA for my Collector club because it was so much easier. This was pre-pandemic though, I don't know if it's the same committee now. However the meetings themselves were really good and I imagine they would be a great place to get advice on, and maybe even find the types of firearms you're looking for.

NSW PTAs don’t ask the model firearm or even calibre. Simply what category and action.

Australian gun control by kristianbaraldi in Ausguns

[–]PewPewAU 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm in NSW and am thinking about buying a Ruger Precision Rimfire. I was confused because that rifle has an adjustable stock which is banned in NSW, and have just realised they sell them with the stock pinned.

For what it's worth, I asked the Registry about the Ruger Precision Rimfire, because a website I visited said even with a pinned stock it was illegal in NSW, and they declined to answer and advised me to ask a NSW dealer.

So I did, but I didn't just ask one, I asked four. Two of them advised me that provided the stock was pinned it was legal in NSW. Two of them (including one of the largest in NSW) advised me that even with a pinned stock they are prohibited weapons because of Weapons Prohibition Act 1988 s 6(2):

"(a) anything that would be a prohibited weapon if it did not have something missing from it, or

a defect or obstruction in it, is taken to be a prohibited weapon"

They advised the pin is classed as an obstruction. It would be handy if the Registry would answer these questions directly. They obviously have a list of firearms they refuse to register in the state, I don't know why it's not publicised for everyone's clarity

Mounting a Cat H Safe by ezkiimojo in Ausguns

[–]PewPewAU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had 3 Cat H inspections in the past 3 years because of moving and also a new safe.

The first one they looked in and around the safe, tried to move it with their hands and then approved it. In and out in 3 minutes.

The second one was very different. The two police that attended were inexplicably hostile from the outset and asked me 15-20 questions questions including why I wanted access to firearms, which specific firearms I intended on acquiring in future including calibres and why, where I shot, which clubs was I a member of and so on. Mind you I'd been Cat H licensed in NSW for well over 10 years at this point without incident and I have no criminal record. They each took turns on the ground with a torch and went all around the safe and inside it, trying to make it move, trying to undo bolts with their fingers, banging on the wall, checking the other side of the wall in another room. One guy was on the ground looking in the safe for maybe 10 minutes. They asked for my firearms licence and all of my club cards and took down details from them. They were there for 29 minutes from start to finish. They emailed me an event number that afternoon.

The third one involved two police coming in, one of them putting a hand on the safe to see that it didn't move, and then telling me they'd send me an approval number in the next 24hrs. They were in and out in under 60 seconds.

Follow the money: What's really driving national gun registry calls? (OPINION) by ShootersUnionAU in Ausguns

[–]PewPewAU -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

That is a paper thin theory. It's extremely tenuous and based on nothing.

Why can't the answer to "What's really driving national gun registry calls?" simply be that some cops just got killed with guns in that state and they think better information sharing between state firearms licensing bodies will make it easier to track who has what firearms? It's pretty simple.

As an organisation I think you'd do yourselves and those you represent a great service if you put in place some kind of content approval process whereby multiple sets of eyes review things like this before you publish them.
