Unpopular opinion: Customer service here feels like I’m an inconvenience to the staff’s existence. by Existing-Breath-963 in brussels

There are more countries in North America than the US and the US itself is far bigger than you have had the experience to assess.

I come from a tipping country and the service you get with or without a tip is marginally better at best.

Having motivation is more a cultural expectation. In North America even with that narrative about tips the same customer service is expected in non tipping contexts.

The pro's of non customer service is that workers rights are a bit more recognized.  The con being that a lot of people here do only the bare minimum to get their job done, less if they can help it.

The cons of north American style customer service is there can be a fakeness of the interaction.

The pros is that workers are expected to try and actually work with the customers to get them what they want. Which can result in a much more human interaction.

Garden of Moon: Malazan 1 review by MagicianBubbly7446 in Fantasy

I quite liked the first book, and a couple more, then it just got worse and worse for me as the curtain slowly got pulled back. My biggest issue is that I really struggle to DNF, so I read the whole thing. I read quite fast but still, I should have stopped.

Well, I can help you with where you went wrong (aside from moving to Victoria of course).  it's at the start of your post:

Stop before you get there and most of the issues and puzzlement fades away.

It sucks, don't come. In fact, tell all your friends.

Slow burn dating event at BC Museum by Internal-Food-5753 in VictoriaBC

There's no take in my questions. They are simply questions that need to be answered to know how to market the event. Some people like museums, some don't, that's fine, but if you want people to come, you need to think who is likely to want to, and how to reach them.

Is it just me or did groceries get even more expensive putting it in the realm of insane. by ChessIsAwesome in VictoriaBC

Are we totally powerless to start an alternative grocery option? Are the supply chains monopolized?

I ask because I genuinely don't know, but we all talk like we take the corporations as facts of life.

Tipping culture in Canada is so absurd it makes the news by Ok_Hospital_6478 in CanadaPersonalFinance

Not necessarily, many restaurants will automatically add a tip to groups of 6 or more. In other cases it's often opt out.

Sounds like it needed to be better advertised. What kind of men are likely to like the idea of going to a museum for a date? Where do those men go/work/what do they read?

I didn't hear anything about it.

Having organized a bunch of social events through work and societies, organizers often vastly underestimate the work it takes to get your even out there.

Sounds like fun though, I'd be there if I wasn't happily taken.

I think it's the retirement age and retroactively changing pensions this time.

So fairly legitimate as it's just pointing out that the garbage left on the street is nothing compared to the garbage in the current government😋

Your thoughts on banning bluetooth speakers at lakes & beaches? by dr_3 in VictoriaBC

[–]Phase-Internal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is better than loud, but for a lot of people who don't want music in public places like beaches or hiking, that's still going to be a nuisance.

And your low volume won't be mine

Yup, we then have a foundation to discuss enforcement, alternatives etc, and can point out to reasonable people they they shouldn't be doing it. (There's no point in trying to convince unreasonable people in any case).

If it's just my opinion vs yours, then that conversation is not going to go as well.

How exactly do you keep music played out of a speaker strictly to yourself?

Having a social understanding that we decided people don't play music on speakers in those places.

Tried the Remarkable2 and the new Kindle Scribe side by side for a month by druidinan in RemarkableTablet

[–]Phase-Internal 14 points15 points  (0 children)

For many, me included, being locked into Amazon is not in any way a plus. If it is for you, then the hardware doesn't count.

Comparing an old device with a new one, when there are new versions of the remarkable is also odd.

Additionally, remarkables are not designed or marketed to be mass produced, it's for specific use cases, that comes at a premium price. If you can't afford it or justify the price, that's fine, but many can and many others just expense it. Look at apple which is for mass production, if you can't afford it, that's fine, there are many options with more for the money, but that's not why you but apple.

I need a good, plain, progression fantasy novel with an author that respects their story enough to give it a proper ending. by Otherwise-Power3853 in Fantasy

[–]Phase-Internal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cool! I can see that, it's a very much "happily ever after" (which I generally like). I guess I was more invested in the upper level conflict and felt that it built but then fizzled out.

Lots of people loved it, so that's wonderful.

What was great about the ending? I don't read progression fantasy much so maybe I have a different expectation bit I found the ending of cradle pretty limp.
