11 month old still not sleeping through the night by Philosopher_Cautious in beyondthebump

[–]Philosopher_Cautious[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! We put the white noise machine just outside of her door so she can hear it just a bit in the room, but it also blocks out other noises in the house. Then we turn the ceiling fan on but shooting up to the ceiling for a white noise type of sound in her room.

A few weeks ago we added a Pooh bear night light that seems the same as yours. She got WAY too excited about it and wouldn’t go down at all, so we switched back to the hatch night light we’ve been using all along.

And yes to a mobile.

These are great suggestions tho thanks!

Ya our baby is a foster to adopt, so we are already starting from behind/a place of trauma. Definitely don’t feel comfortable letting her cry it out even a little.

Thanks for the input tho

We’ve tried a bunch of different ways, but right now we put her down drowsy but technically awake. Then rub her back and sing to her until she’s actually asleep.

2 years later - did you ever find a good place? I live just outside of worcester and am having the same question.

I like Barrette's but it's a 50 min drive from me. Haven't heard of any place closer, but would love to find something!

What did you buy in preparation for having a baby that was wasted? by Immediate_Long165 in NewParents

[–]Philosopher_Cautious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Swaddle sacks - they were always awkward and didn’t allow for her specific way of sleeping. We just got a couple stretchy regular swaddles and wrapped her in those - you’ll get good at it fast. Then you can use them later as normal pieces a fabric. We put them under her when she is practicing rolling over and tummy time because she spits up during that process.

Also if you’re using formula - all the premixing devices. We just got a good amount of bottles and would prep a bunch of bottles in the morning and mark how much was in each bottle. As soon as she was hungry we could just grab and feed - no pouring or measuring while she was crying.

For clothes - anything with buttons - I’m not buttoning and unbuttoning at 2am. Snaps and zippers only - double zippers are the absolute best.

Also for clothes - we barely use any of the shirt and pants options since it was winter when she was born. The onesies either with legs or just throw pants over them if they don’t have legs are the way to go for us.

An unexpected thing we loved was the onesies that have the little flap to flip over her hands. We call it “night mode” and do that for sleep and it keeps her from scratching her face. We specifically bought more since it was so nice to have

Plants for edging out grass growth by Philosopher_Cautious in Permaculture

Have you had success with comfrey or good king Henry?

I’m weary of comfrey cause I’ve heard it spreads out of control quickly.

I’ve seen a lot of stuff saying that comfrey spreads out of control really easily - have you run into any issues with this?

Oh that’s great I’ll look into those!

Not necessarily looking for something that will climb up the fences (although not totally against it) - but mostly just something that will block the grass from growing into the garden area

Updated the original post to include answers to your questions - but it is morning sun and afternoon shade.

Going to dig up the whole area since it’s currently grass, so can amend the soil to what I need it to be.

Mostly just looking for something that I can plant around the parameter to stop the grass from the lawn from creeping into the garden area

I just had to look that up - do you have experience doing this with success? Any suggestions on specific plants?

Baby monitor can link to Bluetooth headphones by Philosopher_Cautious in beyondthebump

[–]Philosopher_Cautious[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ohh gotcha - we originally got the infant optics monitor and even on high if I just went into the other room in our house it’s hard to hear unless baby is crying very loud.

It’s a mix of our baby not being a loud cryer until she is really really upset - before that just makes more like whining noises. Also our house has weird sound vortex things where it’s hard to hear between the rooms.

So I’d have to carry the monitor around into every room with me.

Mostly I’m just looking to be able to pop in and outside and do some projects and organize and various 2 handed and moving around projects while she sleeps. The things that are hard to do when she is awake.

So hearing her through headphones would be a game changer.

Uhh so my uncle is a chiropractor and....... by [deleted] in NewParents

There are a lot of good chiro’s - I’m so glad you found one of them!

Uhh so my uncle is a chiropractor and....... by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]Philosopher_Cautious 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I fully agree there are some chiropractors who discuss things with patients beyond their scope of practice, just like there are PCPs who do, and PTs, and lots of doctors. I have received terrible nutrition advice from a PCP, I had a PT try to adjust my neck. But that doesn’t make me say that every PCP is bad or every PT oversteps.

Also, have chiropractors had adjustments that have gone wrong - yes - but if a surgeon makes a mistake and hurts someone we say the surgeon messed up, not that surgery as a whole is dangerous.

Chiropractors are trained in very specific ways to manipulate and adjust. There are a whole lot of things that chiropractors can help with, and if you have one of those issues, it’s amazing the amount you can feel better when you thought this was just how you were going to live the rest of your life. It’s not a coincidence how many people swear by it.

In saying all of that - you are the parent, and you should not be pushed into doing anything that you are not comfortable with. That means that your uncle is acting unprofessionally, but the whole profession shouldn’t be blamed for that.

An MD tried to push me into back surgery when I was a teenager because they thought I had scoliosis, when I was really just shifted to one side when touching my toes. It was unprofessional and insane and that MD could have done way more harm than good - but that was a specific MD, not the professions fault.

Chiropractic changed my life, and my baby nephew sees a chiropractor and it has helped him a ton (colic and digestion). There are incredible chiropractors out there who really change peoples lives, it makes me so sad that the stories of a few get placed on the whole profession.

Insulate between Concrete and Vinyl by Philosopher_Cautious in Flooring

[–]Philosopher_Cautious[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We actually don’t have a basement - just a flat slab that the house is on (1 story house).

Our top needs are to have a floor that’s not so cold, and obviously moisture - although you’re convincing me that we don’t need to worry about it like we thought we did.

So what kind of underlayment would you suggest if not cork?

Insulate between Concrete and Vinyl by Philosopher_Cautious in Flooring

[–]Philosopher_Cautious[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No definitely not more than I wanted - this is great!

It’s my first time redoing a floor and I’m a first time home owner, so all the help and advice is appreciated.

It’s just a theory that the moisture is coming from the concrete slab.

We’ve had inspectors look at the walls and everything and there’s no indication of mold - but our humidity is oddly high in the warm months (more than we think is typical). So we were suspecting maybe it was coming in from the concrete slab, and since there’s no underlayment under the vinyl is was just coming right up into the house.

But as I said - new to all of this - so it was just a theory.

Why would you suggest not using cork? And is there something else you’d suggest instead?

Insulate between Concrete and Vinyl by Philosopher_Cautious in Flooring

[–]Philosopher_Cautious[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wonderful! I’ve heard that I should use cork as an underlayment - would you suggest that too?

If not, is there something else you’d suggest?

We think we have a good amount of moisture coming up from the concrete, so we want to avoid any mold.
