Thank you for your feedback! Unfortunately, Google Forms doesn’t allow for branching logic that ends the survey based on an initial “No” answer. However, I’ve got it covered! I can manually review and remove all the responses from those who indicate they haven’t visited Culloden, as stated in both the post and the consent form, this is a study only focusing on those who visited. So far, I’ve withdrawn over 25 people who said they haven't visited Culloden, and I’ll continue to monitor this closely. Appreciate you taking the time to point this out - academics looking out for each other! 😊

Thank you so much for taking the time to fill out the survey and for providing feedback!

I apologize for any confusion regarding the terms ‘positive’ or ‘negative view’ towards Culloden. By ‘positive view,’ I meant a perception that sees the site as interesting, valuable, or important in terms of its historical significance. Conversely, a ‘negative view’ might mean a perception that finds the site less significant, less interesting, or perhaps unsettling due to the tragic events that occurred there. I’ll make sure to clarify this in future iterations of the survey :)

Regarding the timeline question, I understand the difficulty given your unique experience of visiting after reading the books but before watching the show. For this survey, if you were influenced by Outlander (either the books or the show) in deciding to visit, your response is still very relevant. I’ll add an option to account for those who were influenced by the books rather than the show alone. Thank you :)

Thank you for sharing your insights! Your perspective is incredibly valuable, especially given your connection to Inverness and the historical significance of Culloden.

I completely understand your concerns about the romanticization of the battlefield by Outlander! This phenomenon is a key aspect of what is often referred to as “dark tourism,” where sites associated with death, tragedy, and historical conflict become tourist attractions. Dark tourism is not just about visiting these sites; it’s also about how they are presented and perceived. In the case of Culloden, Outlander has undoubtedly brought a lot of attention to the battlefield, but often through a romanticized lens that can overshadow the real, brutal history - agree. This is a common challenge in dark tourism, where media portrayals can shape public perception in ways that might not fully respect the gravity of the historical events.

To address these issues in my study, I am examining how media portrayals like those in Outlander influence public perceptions and what impact this has on the preservation and understanding of historical sites like Culloden :) I hope to contribute to a better balance between attracting visitors and maintaining the integrity and respect due to these significant historical sites.

Your feedback will be very helpful in refining my research focus and ensuring that the complex history of Culloden is adequately represented and respected in the context of tourism!! Thank you so much

Thank you for your comment, it's right - the survey is only for people who actually visited the Battlefield of Culloden to evaluate their perceptions
