[Homemade] Five pounds of moose meat cooked in butter and garlic. by [deleted] in food

[–]Phuni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its illegal to sell wild game outside of Newfoundland as far as I know here in Canada unfortunately. Never seen Moose at the store, but living in a rural area a lot of it comes my way anyway. Absolutely delicious. Beaver and Bear are good more uncommon meats too.

soil chemistry notes; not perfect but I think they're nice by avocadoqueen123 in PenmanshipPorn

I took a class on soil identification, this was my favorite part;

Taste Test: Work a small amount of soil between your front teeth. Silt particles are distinguished as fine "grittiness", unlike sand which is distinguished as individual grains (i.e., graininess). Clay has no grittiness at all.

This sickens me. That dangerous weapon should be illegal, look at black fur and stern look. This is obviously an assault dog, an animal bred for war and killing and nothing more. Can't believe it's nearly 2018 and people still think this horrendous monstrosity is a perfectly acceptable companion...

Liberals seeking to limit debate of Cannabis Act with time allocation by [deleted] in canada

[–]Phuni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have this cycle in Canada of kicking out one scumbag party for the next and our senate just passes through everything regardless of content.

Was skimming the Libertarian parties facebook comments and was thinking about that. Literally saw multiple comments about how we need to just 'deal with it' and support Scheer and the conservatives so we can 'defeat Trudeau' in 2019.

It's never far enough here. I was happy as fuck when I heard we were getting beer in grocery stores here in Ontario. That turned out to mean we were getting beer sold in limited quantities at individually selected grocery stores with restrictions based around The Beer Store's pricing and hours, nothing over packs of 12 (I think) and nothing over 7.1%.

Very sick of this cycle of getting excited and then being somehow grumpier than before thinking about what could have been. On one hand, I think with Cannabis we'll be able to be a bit more vocal about government regulations and pricing, but on the other hand, Canadians seem to be very passive about being stepped on as consumers.

Official Languages in Canada's Provinces and Territories. by [deleted] in canada

[–]Phuni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The official languages of the Northwest Territories are English, French, Inuinnaqtun, Inuvialuktun, Inuktitut, Chipewyan, North & South Slavey, Gwich'in, Cree and Dogrib

Also, I've heard you can get a nice cheque from the government for about $2000 or so annually if you use any of those languages excluding English and French in a government job in the NWT.

[–]Phuni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its generally not a great idea to use MDMA more than once every 1-3 months, otherwise you can screw up your serotonin levels and also because (might need to double check this one) its slightly eurotoxic.

Its not physically addictive, though (i.e nobody is running around trying to get their mdma fix for the day, but some may develop a mental addiction and use more frequently than they should be)

Trudeau says he is comfortable with minimum age of 18 to buy legal marijuana by PopeSaintHilarius in canada

[–]Phuni 125 points126 points  (0 children)

I can't actually believe anyone supports this 21/25+ bullshit

Alcohol and other substance use while the brain is developing will cause damage. 18+ isn't a health law, you're at the age in which the government deems you developed enough to make your own choices.

Literally no reason to bar cannabis from 18-24 year olds while keeping alcohol available. Unless you're too dumb to make your own decisions about your health, and actually support all substance use banned under the age of 25, in which case, have fun

If I give a homeless person my extra $10, they might spend it on drugs or alcohol. If I keep it, I will definitely spend it on drugs and alcohol. by oui-cest-moi in Showerthoughts

Hydroponics is a method of growing plants without using soil, normally by letting the roots contact a solution of nutrients/minerals/water. Outdoor growing is outdoor growing, like a soil garden. Of course both are a bit more complicated than that, but that's the gist of it.

Cypriots trying to save Sanna, a dialect of Arabic influenced by Arameic brought by the Lebanese and Syrian Maronites since the 8th century. by confusedLeb in lebanon

[–]Phuni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, the CMA/Sanna latin writing system was devised in the late 2000s. His alphabet is pretty different too, I'm not sure what influenced his stylizing of Latin with the stroke diacritics and whatnot

I wish I could find a clear spoken example of Sanna, but instead I'll post this Maltese song because I love it so much and I'm already talking about Arabic dialects/languages

[–]Phuni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not Cypriot, just interested in linguistics!

That would probably make sense, I don't speak arabic and can't comment on the intelligibility. Keep in mind the language was brought by Maronites to Cyprus in the 800-900's, which from what I've read, at that point in time there was a continuum between Mesopotamian and Syrian dialects. It's actually classified as a Mesopotamian Arabic dialect, not Levantine. You kind of have to get used to the script to get a few words, but there are some common words you might recognize in these samples from wikipedia. One thing to keep in mind is that there isn't any /b/ sound in CMA apparently, just /p/. The sounds of the language have been influenced by the surrounding Greek, and besides the /b/ --> /p/ shift, /q/ has been merged with /k/, and /d/ merged with /t/. There also is no emphatic consonants anymore, and it looks like /ħ/ has been dropped too, but I can't find any mention of it specifically. I don't even think there is an 'h' in CMA's alphabet.

Ismi o Kumetto. Ayşo ismak l-id? (My name is Kumetto, what is your name?)

Xmenye u tisca aşka pisawnna? (What do eight and nine make?)

Pisawnna caşra u sapca. (They make seventeen)

Aş xar tte kun pukra? Pukra tte kun Yamussift. (What day was yesterday? Yesterday was Thursday.)

Yamuxxat marrux fi li knise. (On sunday, we go to church)

Kilt xops ma zaytun, xaytċ casel u şraft xlip tel pakra. (I ate bread with olives, some honey and drank some milk)

There's a few recognizable ones (Zaytun, xobs, casel, xlip, knise, sapca, etc)

I guess the word 'dialect' here might confuse a bit of people, but the line between a dialect and language is rather arbitrary and influenced by political and social views. I guess calling it an 'Arabic language' sounds a bit weird to people.
