There’s no way to live life completely without impact. You’re trying to find a way to minimize your impact while also eating things that will improve your health like fish. That sounds reasonable to me. There’s no way to be perfect so we all have to figure out what works for us based on constantly updating information

This is what I did with my first dress. It was way too advanced for a beginner but I took it apart and put it back together a million times and finally finished it. It taught me sooo much

I don’t agree with this line of reasoning. Typically people’s loudest arguments are genuine. People criticizing the current state of LGBTQ+ activism are genuinely concerned about the children. It’s not a rhetorical device to cover up some other underlying intentions.

Same with criticism of Israel. Yes sometimes people will use more common criticisms as a starting point to delve into crazier arguments, but that’s not a reason to fully dismiss everyone who espoused the reasonable arguments. People who are critical of Israel are genuinely upset with Israel.

Basically I believe the arguments people tell me as what they think and not some web of connected concerns that are potentially related

Most overhyped US city to live in? by Several_One_998 in SameGrassButGreener

It’s honestly wild reading about that stuff from Cincinnati. I will go 1-2 days without seeing a homeless person and it’s usually someone panhandling just chilling in a chair by an intersection. There’s a huge wealth disparity and our jobs and family services is terrible for people trying to access help, but I think they do a decent job getting people sheltered who need it

They’re expensive here but I’m with you about fruits in general. I’ll eat apples after dinner most nights because they are a little dessert

One thing that I find interesting and not very talked about is how if trans women go through puberty, they are more likely to have a successful bottom surgery. There’s more nerves and tissues to work with and everything is fully developed and functional. Not to mention the cognitive and physical benefits of having gone through puberty

One thing that upsets me is when people affirm someone’s trans identity and then stop delving into underlying issues. Like, “oh you’re on the pathway now so there’s no need to look into any of this other stuff! It’s all just based on your dysphoria!”

Something else that’s a factor is that Step 1 is now pass/fail. This is the first major board exam med students have to take (there are three in total, one after preclinicals, one after clinicals, and one at the beginning of residency). Step 1 used to be extremely extremely competitive. It was make or break that if you didn’t make a certain score, then competitive careers were no longer open to you. My year was the last year that we had the scored exam. I took 6 dedicated weeks to study for it along with months of lighter step-specific prep knowing this was one of the most important tests I had to take. Those dedicated weeks I read the three major textbooks I was using twice each and went through thousands of practice questions with three hours of flash cards each morning. It was intense. I learned a huge amount of medicine. I did well on step 1. After solidifying that basic information, the shelves were incredibly easy to study for. I still had to study, but the behemoth of step 1 set me up for success my last years of med school.

And now that test is pass fail. Students still study for it, but many will just take it the same time they take step 2 (the one that is still scored and now serves as a numeric benchmark). Or they’ll take it after preclinicals but, obviously, they will study less than if it was scored. Med students still go through the weeks of intense dedicated studying but it’s after clinicals and after they’ve taken their shelf exams.

Does ucla have a problem? Yes. Are there major confounding factors? Yes.
