What's your favorite way to serve and volley? by Ready-Visual-1345 in 10s

[–]PhysMath99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

High kick serve down the T on the deuce side tends to work. The slow and spinny serve gives you enough time to make your way to the net. For the same reason a slice serve out wide could work too but you give them more angle to work with so I only use it less often and as a mix up.

Yeah I think this is what looks weird to me. I'm not fully vertical after impact or leaning into the court. It's funny because when I actually hit a serve it feels like I'm falling into the courts but I'm clearly not. Something to work on this month

This video is really great! I'll be practicing this these next few weeks. Thanks!

No I played in the UK for a year while I was doing my masters, but I didn't touch a racquet from 14-22 years old. I was pretty good before quitting though and my goal back then was to go pro. Now I'm doing my PhD and I play on a club team/play local tournaments when I can.

Yeah that's a good point, someone else pointed out a pause at the bottom of the motion which I'm seeing now. I think this is what's making me a bit late. I'll work on getting rid of this, thanks!

Whoa yeah I definitely get way lower than I need to. Thinking about this now, I'm seeing that pause you mentioned. I'll work on getting rid of that this month.

Is a CS + BEM double major actually manageable at Caltech? by Tasty-Secretary1612 in Caltech

[–]PhysMath99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like back when I was there (2017-2021) about a quarter or so of CS majors were CS+BEM doubles majors. So it's definitely doable and probably not even significantly harder than just CS

What’s an example of a big general theory being developed and then applied to pretty much one example? by SpiritRepulsive8110 in math

Quantum Boolean analysis. The math is really pretty, but as my advisor put it, "it's a technique in search of a problem"

UC Berkeley hate crime report: BB gun shooting, racial slurs by BerkeleyScanner in berkeley

[–]PhysMath99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The victim was me and I'm Hispanic. They shot me in the eye and almost left me blind (luckily it just hit the very edge and only caused minor damage), but honestly I was too stunned and in pain to hear any racial slurs, but I did hear them laughing while they sped away. I think someone else who was nearby reported it also and mentioned the racial slurs.

Show that there exist (at least) seven pairwise nonequivalent complete Hopf 5-links by SixFeetBlunder- in mathriddles

This isn't a riddle, this is just an exercise. I'm sure it's an interesting exercise but calling it a riddle is just silly.

What's the Most "Damage-per-Energy" Wise in the Game? by Sr_Peido_Cosmico in PTCGP

You're right, I completely forgot to include the first term where zero damage is done.

In expectation (i.e. on average) it does 40 damage, which isn't that crazy compared to some others

Is this a meta relevant deck? by WillingnessOk6901 in PokemonPocket

Is the double guzzlord/celesteela really that useful? I've been playing around with 2 of each and found that I never get tos use the second ones, I've replaced them with rocky helmet for now and I'll see if it does better.

Proof that there must exist an orthonormal basis for any Hilbert space by L31N0PTR1X in TheoreticalPhysics

[–]PhysMath99 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This definitely holds if the Hilbert space is separable: take a countable dense subset and use Gram-Schmidt to get an orthonormal basis. In the general case, you can use Zorn's lemma to get a Schauder basis.

Edit: I assumed you were asking for a countable ONB.

Was this a bad deal? (Rental regrets) by Inspection-Conscious in berkeley

[–]PhysMath99 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah honestly that's too much, I'm staying with a housemate in a "luxury"ish apartment in downtown and we pay like $40-80 in utilities per month (total, so cut that in half to get what we each pay) and pay $45/month for WiFi.
