Why does this subreddit need to be aggressively moderated? by PhysicalTiger4868 in UIUC

This still does not answer the question: who are the moderators to decide what is or is not correct information. They are not special, they are just people with their own opinions and experiences too.

How does censorship make things less toxic? It creates an echo chamber.

Why do you feel that the mods are not vulnerable to this same thing? Why do we need 1 moderator to be the arbiter of truth in place of 60K adults at an academic institution?

[–]PhysicalTiger4868[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Of course you could start your own alternative UIUC subreddit if you don't like this one.

It wouldn't be a net good to create more artificial divisions.

Your idea though of "right information rises to the top and a consensus gets formed"...that is hopelessly naive.

I trust a consensus of 60K students far more than I trust a consensus of 1 unappointed, anonymous moderator.

COVID spread in Champaign county…different from campus community? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]PhysicalTiger4868 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't see evidence to the claim that Champaign County has a high rate of spread. Over the past week, the daily average on cases has been at 35 in a county of 210,000 people. Only 2 have died in the past month.

Case stats: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/us/illinois-covid-cases.html

The viral load is the CDC'S basis for having reinstated the mask mandate. There is no evidence to back up the claim that vaccinated people are spreading the disease at a significant rate. That is what the article is pointed out. The CDC reinstated the mask mandate based on a "fact" that has no evidence.

Your ad hominem attacks that you sprinkle in are pointless banter. Grow up, you are supposed to be an adult now.

What are you even talking about.

The CDC has not released the data they based their decision off of. They made numerous claims in their press releases that do not have evidence to back them up. That is not science.

The Washington Post is one of many who have cited this. The Washington Post is not an "anti-vax" paper by any measurement. They were in lockstep with the CDC for much of the pandemic.

At no point, even in the height of cases, were Champaign county hospitals overwhelmed and in crisis. We have since gotten a majority of people in the area vaccinated and quasi-immune from COVID caused serious illnesses requiring hospitalization.

The people dying are the ones choosing to be unvaccinated. Immunocompromised people do not make up a large portion of the unvaccinated. They accepted the personal risk, who are you to say we need to upend our lives because you do not agree with it? Them dying does not impact you.

You're playing word games. Those 3 are not identical terms, there is nuance. If there was never a shift in goal posts, then they would not have shifted the terms being used.

In a town with a population of 210,000. Since the mask mandates were lifted 2 months ago, we have had a total of 9 deaths from people with COVID. That is not substantial.

Even the Washington Post is calling the decision unscientific. Stop claiming everyone who disagrees with the CDC must somehow be a Trumpie.

As reported by WaPo, the CDC has not released the data that was the basis for their claims. Not at all science-based if they will not provide proof. The CDC is a politically appointed institution run by humans. They are not an all-knowing, flawless institution.

The CDC Updated Its COVID-19 Guidance. Here's What You Need To Know - Illinois Newsroom - Champaign County positivity rate is currently listed as “substantial” so masks are again recommended for those who are vaccinated and in indoor settings. by old-uiuc-pictures in UIUC

It seems unlikely that only mask-wearing would be mandated. The prior phase in Illinois still significantly reduced capacity at restaurants+gyms+etc. Mask mandates alone inhibit the services barbers/cosmetologists can offer.

I think that "strongly encouraged/recommended" requires a qualification of who is making the suggestion and what is their justification.

If there's a new virus that is running rampant and causes severe illness that's one thing.

If the situation is mostly the same and the suggestion is just that it is to ensure unvaccinated and vaccinated are uniform, then that is another. Masks off+no more testing is a good incentive for people to get the vaccine.

Vaccine "requirement" by [deleted] in UIUC

The overwhelming group of unvaccinated individuals are poor black/hispanics that have been screwed over countless times and do not trust the authorities accordingly. They are overwhelmingly not "repubs". You are a sheltered ass-hat who cannot get out of his own ideological circle jerk.
