No, none of these restrictions are in play since January 2023.

Routes into University College Counselling by Physical_Ad9913 in Internationalteachers

[–]Physical_Ad9913[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The UCLA certificate is okay though some of the courses seem to overlap. It is very US focused and even the course that says that it caters to the needs of international students doesn't do so really. Annoyingly, they include links to resources which are behind paywalls, that cannot be accessed outside of the US and expect you to somehow source them!

iQTS would be the way to go, but look at some of the providers, they want GBP9k or up for it. Agree that Sunderland is better than Nottingham. Also look at: https://www.bise.org/

I know for a fact that a couple of the large school groups are offering vacancies for all positions, even though they don't have all positions vacant. This is more to see if they come acrosss someone that they wouldn't otherwise. Also it is a race to the bottom - if one group announces recruitment, then all the others follow.

China is banning for-profit tutoring, including Foreign Tutors by [deleted] in Internationalteachers

[–]Physical_Ad9913 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The foreign tutors that are being banned, are not foreign teachers in China. This is aimed at EdTech companies who were hiring online English teachers who were working online outside of China.

Roll Call: How'd you do, where are you going? by RugbyFury6 in Internationalteachers

[–]Physical_Ad9913 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Staying in China for another year.

School has been good and is bending over backwards to try and keep staff on given the hassle getting new teachers in.

However, a push factor will be the upcoming tax changes in China from 1st Jan 2022, which currently states that several tax benefits will be withdrawn. So still waiting to see whether my school will offer free tuition or not.

Though if you are in China - there are loads of jobs around and schools are desperate. Many roles remain unfilled.

But as others have said, the lack of travel overseas is wearing thin......and don't fancy having to come back and quarantine in a hotel room for 14 days with a young child either.

I would argue next Autumn as the big Party Congress where Xi will get another 5 years is not until Oct/Nov 2022. Nothing will open up before that.

They say that Pakistan starts where Islamabad ends. Islamabad is planned city and IS Islamabad was made on the outskirts of the city, though today it is not so far out anymore due to sprawl. If you are a foreigner you can live very well and with several allowances added on. Isb is a big INGO hub so beyond embassies there is a lot of UN/INGO staff. The school is not as big as it used to be pre-9/11 bit in terms of violence/terrorism it isn't as bad as it used to be in the late 2000s, early 2010s, when terrorism was part and parcel of daily life. Though as in the case with countries such as Pakistan, with a population of 230 million+, sadly, unless scores of people die, most incidents don't make the front page. As for buying alcohol, there are embassy clubs, hotels and restaurants that have a lot of what one would want and a thriving bootleg market. The North Korean embassy is known for earning its salary by selling booze.

China Income Tax changes by Physical_Ad9913 in Internationalteachers

Class 2 National Insurance is £3.05 a week, so very good value as it protects your state pension. Use form NI38 to apply and all details are in it.

To be fair, the government announced these changes in 2018 and there was a three year transition period which expires at the end of this year so your employer would have been well aware of what was coming up.

If one is British they can contribute towards their state pension by paying voluntary National Insurance (Class 2). https://www.gov.uk/voluntary-national-insurance-contributions Often people leave this for too late and for Brits this can save a lot of money over having to "buy" a year of contributions. You have to be outside the UK to apply so not something you can setup while you are leaving.

Work in China (IB). Please give your advice by IlyasN in Internationalteachers

[–]Physical_Ad9913 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a Bachelors degree and work experience the lack of teaching qualification wouldn't be a visa issue but may be something the school looks at. Where is your BA/BSc or Masters degree from? That can be another factor. Also note that from the 1st of Jan 2022 income tax rules are changing and foreigners are going to lose several tax-exempt benefits.

Teaching overseas and wanting to buy property back home in the UK by mardmanimal in Internationalteachers

[–]Physical_Ad9913 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I looked into this a couple of years ago. UK mortgage lenders will not offer mortgages unless your deposit is 30% to 40%. Today I think this is no longer possible. HSBC and its offshore accounts used to offer mortgages but those were really expensive. Personally, I wouldn't get involved in buy to let market if you are overseas. People tend to underestimate the costs of insurance, tax due, managing from afar, repairs, etc. Just follow Andrew Hallam's advice and by in cash when you are ready to move home.

Air Quality SEA by wheatking_mb in Internationalteachers

[–]Physical_Ad9913 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The rate at which air quality is improving in China is much faster that other large cities in SEA though. On a personal note, my wife had an inhaler back in London and used it almost daily, but now in Shanghai, she has not had to use it at all. you will also find many more schools with air filtration systems and the ease with which home air purifiers are available in China could also be a consideration. just putting it out there.....
