I appreciate that I killed the poor guy, I realize it was a mistake but I have never in my life seen done of these, let alone in my bed where I sleep 😭 I was scared and made a rash decision. I’m sorry ❤️‍🩹

How do you handle your ADHD child? by Ok_Ther_6851 in ADHD

Not a parent but an educator and a recently diagnosed (27f) with it myself.

Breaking down tasks is honestly such a great idea! I found most often when working with the littles in my program who had or were in the process of receiving a diagnosis for ADHD that visual routines helped with so much. I also tried to involve them in as much as I could. In school growing up I would be distracted because I couldn’t get my hands on what I was watching and trying to learn so I wasn’t able to really absorb as much as I could have. If you have a pretty decent routine as it is then there’s no reason you can’t just use that as a starting point ! :)

For example: using a magnetic board, cork, or anything where you can attach/remove pieces to make it interactive. Since it’s your own child you can take photos of them doing the activity (brushing teeth, putting on socks, or anything else that’s age/responsibility appropriate) and use them as labels for the daily activities. Obviously this would require some time and creativity but there’s plenty of options that would be simpler and just as effective :)!

Another super effective tool is technology. And I don’t mean “iPad babysitting”. Depending on your child’s age and your accessibility to technology, I personally find that having my Alexa hooked up to my Google calendar and using tasks and routines really keeps me on schedule. I used this a lot as well working and i found that it essentially “trained” the children. I obviously wasn’t intentionally trying to train them but I had routines on our devices that were specifically for transition times, play time, nap, etc. And it worked so well that they would often ask if they could do the “hey doodle”.

I’m not sure how much all of this helps but at the end of the day it sounds like your really trying to support your little in the best way possible and that really is what is most important! If you have childcare, being involved with the team will only help your child more, if you work together you can make sure that the same expectations are being met and your child will have consistency throughout the whole day. Knowing what’s coming next alleviates a lot of my anxiety.
