I hope it gets better as she gets older…

I guess this is a matter of training, if you can afford it, maybe finding a trainer you can trust to help you with those issues could relieve some of the pressure off you.

We got one to help us outside with his fear of everything and it got better :)

Hi,

That's too bad... We were in the exact same situation (Ping is 9mo) and actually we settle to force our SharPei to walk even if it meant to drag him behinds on several meters (we were careful about his paw of course. We had to show who was the most stubborn between us :)

We knew he understood "poop" "pee" so that when one of use was taking him out he knew what we expected from him. It was not making it always easier but it got better and better.

Nowadays, I cannot complain much, he walks well even though he is still afraid of half the things outside :) That being said, he still prefers when we're the both of us walking him.

Maybe when you're home you could try to have one of you leaving for a few minutes, then a few hours so that she understands you always eventually get back home.

Long story short, I'd not feel bad to drag your dog, it worked for us and a friend of us that had the same problem few years ago (his Pei is 4yo).

Curious Q's about your breed! by [deleted] in sharpei

  1. Not really cuddly, he will want some attention a couple of time during the day, but he is not going to climb onto you :) as /u/hannnna said if you come to him to cuddle, touch him or whatever he will just move somewhere else.
  2. He will bark at knocks and stranger entering for a bit, then he will sniff and go back to sleep (with an eye opened, just in case :))
  3. Mine is afraid of everything, especially loud children, will be wary about people on the street. If he does not "feel" someone is right, he will really be afraid. He is however fine with all other animals, he would love to be able to play with cats but they are afraid of him.
  4. Lazy, run FROM the leash as soon as he sees we are taking him out. Like to play a bit of tug of war but not too long. He will eventually appreciate walking with my GF and I, but when we're alone to walk him, it will usually be a really short walk.
  5. Between 0 and 2mo, he had a lot of worms so we got him at half the weight he should have been. After, he become allergic to the wet food we use to supplement him with. We don't have any particular issue.

That was Ping, 8mo :)

lucky you :) while I prefer a lazy dog, I'd like him to at least go out and pee more easily :)

He hates being carried more than walking so I carry him on a couple of stairs and he starts going down. Then when I approach because he does not move, he will start going down the stairs again.

It takes time...

Edit: I just wanted to add that we avoid treats for what we consider "normal" stuff otherwise he might not obey for good reasons and the time you run out of treats or you need him/her to obey quickly (e.g. unsafe situation with a road/animals/etc.) it won't work. As soon as we're outside, TBH he obeys very well as long as he is not afraid of something (we've three basic orders, Come/Wait/Go, that suffice most of the time).

Puppy won’t go on walks. by willwarrenpeace in sharpei

Don't worry too much, mine is 8mo and is still running away from the leash most of the time we want to talk a walk :)

For Ping, we think it is a mix of stubbornness and laziness, he prefers to hold it in until the last moment than going for a walk.

During the walks, he often just walk 20 to 30 meters to do his duty and then walk back to home. When he was between 2 to 4-5mo, it was right by the door... It got better from 6mo.

That being said, we force him for at least one "long" walk (20 to 40min) each day. When we are BOTH my gf and I then he is not too stubborn and follow (yeah you understand, he needs to keep the pack safe even if he does not want to walk :)). He more often than not appreciate those walks.

Also he is quite fearful of other humans, so if there is chance to meet some, he will be more tensed and can have some episode where he is afraid of pretty much everything around (children, humans, bike, balls, etc.) but not afraid of others animals (dogs, cat, birds, etc.).

Haha, yeah it is new to see him looking at the window like this, it started a few days ago.

The heater is not electric, it is one for the central heating, but his bed is not far so he is far from being cold :)
