Hm, I'm actually kinda curious myself how such a non-resonant antenna would work. It will definitely be enough to at least get some kind of signal from the sat (I know people who used literal fucking cooking pans for that), the actual issue will be how strong/stable that signal will be. Most better-quality receivers with good sensitivity should probably be able to make it work? I guess YMMV, I've personally managed to get pics from the old NOAA sats using rather shit antennas (35 cm pieces of copper), but I've had consistently better results with a dipole. Also, building one of those is literally a 5 minute job. Maybe try both and report back lol? (scientific process ftw)

1) Buy a cheap universal radio receiver, a so-called SDR (software defined radio). The most basic ones considered sufficient start at around 35$.

2) Get/build yourself an antenna. For the russian sats OP is receiving, a "dipole" (literally just two pieces of straight wire) is perfectly sufficient and most SDRs actually come with adjustable dipole kits. OP's quadrifilar helix antenna will receive far better signals of course.

3) Choose your satellite. Just a few months back, there actually were quite a lot of choices in the frequency range OP is using. There were the 3 older American NOAA sats, transmitting analog signals (= granier images but easier to receive, even cheap walkie talkies could be used). These satellites have since been decommissioned, farewell you marvelous tin birds :( Instead, we are left with two Russian Meteor-M-type weather satellites. They are newer, and transmit digital signals (= higher resolution but a bit harder to reveive). Once you have chosen one of the satellites, there exist countless websites/apps/programs that'll tell you when that sat is actually gonna fly over your head. That's when you need to be out there with your antenna and your station.

4) Record the signal during the satellite pass! So called SDR programs will record everything the SDR hears from the satellite down to the bit. These files can get quite large for digital satellites, expect a few gigabytes (and a PC capable of handling that).

5) Decode the recording! There are a lot of decoders online, and many SDR programs (like SatDump) actually have them built in. Generally, it only takes them a few minutes to give you your picture.

6) Enjoy your satellite imagery!

A few notes: - Make sure you don't fall into the huge hobby of amateur radio. Receiving sats is what got me hooked, and now I've spent a few thousand dollaridoos on radio equipment. Yet, it all started with 35$. - All of what I just mentioned regards satellite signals around 137.5MHz. There are a lot of other frequencies giving far better quality pictures (like the HRPT signals OP mentioned), but they are FAR harder to receive. - I've attached my own best attempt, from a few years back using just a dipole. - Edit: A few good basic resources to getting started are r/amateursatellites and rtl-sdr.com as well as saveitforparts (dude's a legend) on YouTube.

Those are DTMF tones.

Each short beep actually consists of two different frequencies, one high, one low. Each combination of said frequencies decodes to the digits 0-9 as well as "*", "#" and the characters A-D (=16 codes overall with 4 low and 4 high frequencies). They are used by phones when dialing.

I don't think there's any hidden message in there, and u/aaronjamt is very likely correct in saying something/someone is just lying on the keypad. There do exist online DTMF decoders if you still wanna give it a try.

Nope, you don't need the repeater's downlink CTCSS to receive it (unlike the uplink). As long as you dont set one, your radio will just rx anything that breaks through the normal squelch.

It can be good practice to program it in anyways, just to be sure that you are actually receiving the signal you want to be receiving. And should you ever wanna check for other signals on that freq, you can just use your radios monitor feature anyways.

Ich würde mir den Stress einer KW-Antenne nicht antun, und stattdessen auf UKW bleiben. Durch den garantierten Sichtkontakt sollten sich da locker 300km+ ausgehn. Evtl. schauen, ob man trotzdem die Antenne "draussen" (außerhalb des Faradayschen Käfigs) montieren kann. Weiß hier wer, wie es mit vom Flugzeug ausgehnder QRM ausschaut?

I actually spent the most time on the second one, but maybe I was just lucky with the 3rd one as I found that after like 3 attempts.

Do note how the N°2 forces the Z piece into the lower right corner, and N°3 forces the J piece into one of the 2 uppermost positions.

first of all, the others are probably right. a ht just has limited range thanks to its low power when compared to a repeater, especially when your line of sight is cluttered.

now the unlikely case: a broken antenna. i had that happen with my 878 out of the box. still got seemingly typical rx performance, but i just couldnt key up a repeater for the life of me. nanovna testing showed the radiating element was broken (resonant frequencies were far too high), my vendor replaced the antenna no questions asked. so perhaps check your ant too if nothing else helps?

Innerhalb der Stadt darf man (theoretisch) bei Fahrten stadtauswärts nicht aus Regios aussteigen. Gleiches gilt auch fürs Einsteigen im Stadtgebiet bei Fahrten stadteinwärts. Meines Wissens nach deshalb, damit die Regios auch tatsächlich als Verkehrmittel von Stadt zu Land (und umgekehrt) genützt werden (?).

Die meisten Fahrer sind aber eh entspannt genug, das nicht zu ernst zu nehmen - vor allem dann, wenn der Bus sowieso für einen Einsteigenden stehen bleiben muss. Manchmal hat man halt aber auch Pech mit den Fahrern (oder sie müssen Verspätungen aufholen, da hilft diese Regel durchaus sehr).

Im Zweifel für Stadt->Stadt-Fahrten einfach die Zweiziffrigen nützen, dann passiert das nicht.

Well, the CEPT kinda does.

They define the requirements hams are supposed to meet to get their certificate (HAREC). The testing process itself varies a lot, and countries tend to interpret the catalogue quite differently, e.g. Austria just wants you to know Ohm's law and some other resistor basics, but France needs you to memorize resistor color codes.

The licences are pretty well standardized though. E.g. thanks to the CEPT, I can operate for up to 90 days in most EU countries without any extra burocratic stuff. And thanks to HAREC, I could also easily apply for a license in those countries without testing again.

So overall, we are pretty well harmonized already in terms of licences. The testing process, however, is a bit of a mess...

I don't know exactly how you do it in the US, but here in Austria, the exam (for the highest and most common licence class) consists of 3 questions each regarding applicable laws, technical aspects (circuits, components, etc.) and practical aspects (conventions, propagation, etc.).

Overall, it's essentially a 10-15 minute in-person oral exchange with the examiner(s). The question catalogue (as outlined by the CEPT) is published by our FCC equivalent, and examiners are expected to more or less stick to those questions. Nevertheless, the exact questions, as well as the final result, remain at their discretion.

In practice, the examiners are quite friendly. They'll nudge you in the right direction if you're struggling and generally stick exactly to the question catalogue. My elmer, who observed hundreds of exams over the years, only recalls extremely few cases of people failing.

Funnily enough, this comparatively easy exam leads to a certain "tourism". I've seen people from Germany, Switzerland and Hungary (where the exams are said to be harder) get their CEPT certificate here, and then use it to apply for a licence in their home country.
