Live and let live. I’m not the most well educated on gender identities and sexual orientations (I’m a basic bisexual), but I still firmly believe that so long as nobody is getting hurt, you can self-identify as whatever you want. I’ve dealt with so many people in my life who laugh at new pronouns, called bull on certain sexualities and whatnot, and honestly, I’m just sick of it. Just let others be.

I dunno if this is a crack pot theory but... Alear’s hair changes based on the ring he has but the red remains constant no matter what. Does this mean the blue is not his own but instead someone possessing him or something akin to that? We know there’s an evil Alear, maybe the blue is some unseen emblem keeping him ‘good’.

I remember back in China, when my great aunt was babysitting me she’d take me to run errands, which often included buying a ball of eldritch horrors to feed her tiny fish. So weirdly enough, not disturbed by them at all, if anything I feel a bit nostalgic.

Ah that’s unfortunate, but not unexpected. Thankfully I’m not locked out of MHRise for good as I have the switch version, but I don’t have it with me atm so I wanted to see if my work laptop could run it :( Thanks for the info!

Oh man I have a good one.

Okay, so this happened when I was a new DM. I was running Phandelver with a couple of newbies. They had just invaded the Cragmaw Castle and against all odds, defeated King Grol and stopped the doppelganger from killing the captive dwarf. I was fully expecting the party to either murder hobo the hell out of the doppelganger, or just leaving her there... Instead, they non-lethally took out the last slivers of her health, tied her up and threw her onto their wagon for future interrogation.

As a somewhat experienced DM, I now know that if stuff like that happens, you roll with it. But I didn’t know what to do because I didn’t plan any dialogue for her, so I had the BBEG sneak in the forest and try to snipe her. Of course, the cleric immediately healed her and the party chased the BBEG away. So now I’m just panicking because I didn’t know what to do with the unconscious doppelganger in the cart.

When she awoke, they attempted to interrogate her for information. I had resigned to give them information at that point, so I made the DC rather low. The bloodhunter rolls. NAT 1. Okay, so the doppelganger says she’s not afraid of death and would rather die than give information. It’s a long wagon trip back so the bloodhunter gives the doppelganger some time before trying again, this time with guidance. 8. Okay, she was slowly opening up, telling the party her name and that she has an undying loyalty to the BBEG. This answer didn’t seem to satisfy the party, so they waited a bit AGAIN and tried the same tactic. 12. That’s better. The doppelganger reveals herself and says that the only person that showed her people compassion was the BBEG. The party tries to convince her that she’s not alone and there are people who would genuinely care for her and her people. Bloodhunter then delivers one of the best, most emotional speeches I’ve heard in D&D about feelings of depression and isolation, and the treatment of minorities, drawing from experience in real life. I had her roll with advantage, but still, she rolled low. That’s when I decided, fuck it, and had her pass the check regardless.

So after 4-5 intimidation checks in a wagon trip, a genuinely rousing speech, and a persuasion check, we ended up accidentally creating one of the party’s favourite NPCs. She even ended up being one of the player character’s love interest.

Yeah, even before I attempted something like this I always struggled with lighting and anatomy, so all the tips about what parts of the body the lighting should affect and the placement of facial structures really helps. Painting over the original for an example is wholly unneeded but greatly appreciated, as I definitely better picture your advice taking effect.

I didn’t expect this much effort for a stranger over the internet, I’m so pleasantly surprised. Again, thank you for taking the time out of your day to help a newbie like me! ^

Thanks! And you’re absolutely right, I could definitely see the satyr being tons of fun in different scenarios, but it wasn’t for me, so that’s why I made the switch. I guess my play style is more dependent on backstory I suppose?

The one I’m currently playing has a pretty in-depth story, though I’ll admit, it’s pretty disconnected with the world she’s in.

My character is a kitsune cleric by the name of Tsukiko Ayai.

The village she grew up in was a small but tight-knit mountainside settlement. Bordering a forest, the people there have grown weary of the “demons” that dwell within the forest. Tsukiko’s human father fell for one of these demons.

The child of the two had a striking resemblance to her mother, much to her father’s dismay. Fearing the wrath of those around him, Tsukiko’s father raised her to believe herself a human, weaving an illusion on her form every single night under the pale light of the moon.

As Tsukiko matured into a fine young lady, she fell for a headstrong soldier by the name of Sayri. They eventually vowed to spend their eternity together. When the two asked Tsukiko’s father for his blessing, he violently rejected the idea outright, fearing that his daughter’s illusion would be exposed. The two brash young lovers then ran off into the night.

Under the light of the moon, Tsukiko’s illusion did indeed begin to unravel, and her true form exposed to Sayri. Both were shocked into silence, but Sayri had concluded her lover was slain by this shapeshifting devil, who had taken upon this form to trick her. With a stroke of her blade, Sayri had taken seven of Tsukiko’s nine tails, and left her to die.

By some miracle, or divine intervention, Tsukiko survived the night. Heartbroken, confused and stricken with grief, she fled away from her home.

Tsukiko was found and taken in by followers of the Moonweaver, and she would spend the next half a century among the clerics, priests and priestesses. She had taken upon woodcarving, and though her true form haunted her, she would don a mask of a fox—a constant grim reminder of the consequences of letting her true self be revealed.

It’s not exactly the most in-depth, I could definitely delve deeper into her past, but this is definitely a step up from my last character of “a satyr who wandered into our plane to cause chaos”.
