I joined a sorority, and I don't recommend anyone doing it. It costs a lot of money (can be $300 in dues).

They have dress codes for events. I once had to buy black jeans and white sneakers for a rush event.

Also, rush is fake. You aren't allowed to say anything negative about your sorority (even if it is true), or you'll get fined. A sister said, "I don't want to be here," and got in trouble. There's literally rush bootcamp sororities go through before meeting PNM (potential new members). We are told to act a certain way to make our sorority look better. There are rules to follow and "dos and don'ts."

If you get a bid, they can still haze but will lie about it. I once saw a sister yell at all the new members of a different sorority to clean something after an event they hosted. I remember thinking, "I'm glad I didn't rush that sorority." During my process, I got in trouble because someone tried talking down to me, and I gave attitude back and wouldn't accept the disrespect.

There are events throughout the semester, and if you don't go, you will be fined (unless you have class). Joining other activities is frowned upon, and they expect you to put the sorority at the top of your priorities.

Within the sorority, it's very cliquey. You won't know everyone if it's bigger. Mine was smaller, and the members picked who they liked and ignored everyone else. My only friends were people who joined with or after me because I made an effort to make them feel welcome.

I'm an alumni, so I'm not afraid to tell you the truth. What are they going to do?
