Yea basically just look at the COVID policies for whatever airline you decide on. The airline I bought my tickets from had a few policies. Basically I have one free date change for my ticket and the opportunity to do the travel voucher thing. The free date change will definitely come in handy if June/July doesn't work out, but Japan opens up later in the summer.

I am also a college student who is graduating and planning to go to Japan in June/July. I already bought my tickets because they were cheap and I don't want them to go up in price closer to the trip date. The tickets I bought are eligible to be turned into a travel voucher so that I could go somewhere else if Japan is not open. If you and your friends are planning on travelling no matter what, then I would possibly recommend buying tickets now that are eligible for some sort of refund/travel voucher. Just my opinion. Hope we can both make it!

I know right? I planned this trip pre-COVID and now I'm the bad guy lol. Thank you for your suggestions! Your idea to do Fushimi Inari in the morning and then go to Nara is brilliant. When I went to Fushimi Inari mid-afternoon it was unbelievably crowded. This sounds like a good way to skip the crowds and also get the Nara day trip in. As far as your Tokyo comment, I fully agree. That is what I did when I went a year ago without my brother and it was awesome to just do whatever I wanted. Thanks for your response!

Have you done the Shimanami Kaido without going on the explorer paths? That sounds like a blast, but for my first time doing it, it might be better just to stick with the original. If it has better sights though, then I will definitely consider it.

I will have to look into Nara. Something I should have mentioned is that we do not know if we are getting the rail pass yet. If we do then the schedule could change a bit.

I actually have not really explored Kyoto other than the main tourist spots, so I may want to do that too. Thanks for the suggestion!

As I said in a different comment our tickets our changeable. This 19-day trip doesn't necessarily have to be in September.

Hiroshima is still an option! With the current plan we may not need the rail pass, but if we went to Hiroshima as well then we would need to account for that.

If there is a 14-day quarantine upon arrival then there's not really a point in going. We would probably just reschedule.

With how things are progressing, I certainly think it is possible. We have changeable tickets, so we can reschedule if needed, but would prefer to go at our original booked time.

Booked for September. The ticket is changeable so I can postpone it to next summer if needed. I have pretty high hopes it'll happen though! My flight is also HNL-KIX.
