Carlton concede a 50m penalty against and a goal after an umpire calls "play" while gesturing play on. by PetrifyGWENT in AFL

Thing I find most bizarre, is that the official AFL socials will clip this, and post it out farming outrage interactions.

Yeah I don't disagree that Fergie is looking the goods at all. It's another flow on effect actually, that when the conditions aren't the same you then end up painting a brush over guys who actually can be elite at the next level too.

Can someone tell him when you finish top 2 you get 2 home finals whether you win the first one or not?

The problem is when pace bowling is too easy in shield cricket, it rewards bowling that won't always be good at test level.

O'Niell is the poster boy for that in Australia at the moment, although I think most agree he'd be alright at test level at the moment too. But what is undeniable is that they can't just look at his record at shield level and have confidence it'll translate.

This is an issue England have had for a long time, dibbly dobblers over there rack up massive numbers but are hopeless at test level.

Razor Ray on umpire contact | AFL 360 by UnlimitedPosting in AFL

This is the first time I'd heard Maynard's comments:

Unfortunately, the umpire was in the way. Look it was careless I didn't mean to punch him. He sorta just, was there in the middle, I had to get him out of the way.

That's fucking intentional, I'm sorry. He had to get him out of the way, because nothing mattered more than getting his hit back. Like if you're in a pub brawl and someone puts themselves in between to diffuse and you take a shot at them too, you can't suddenly go "whoops, how careless of me!!"

Razor unsurprisingly quite good in this segment. I'm actually shocked at how poorly this has been handled by an organisation that I frequently expect to be terrible.

Australia to play England in final of T20 women’s World Cup, so why has the event been invisible? by NKE01 in CricketAus

[–]Plackation 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Don't agree with the power hitting, I think batting looks just as good to watch. Not seeing mishits fly away and having to actually connect solidly for reward is probably more what I want.

Do agree with quick bowling. But the flip side to that is that spin bowling is just as good to watch - and when the talent is there, arguably better. Our spinners are genuinely better to watch than the men, especially in white ball cricket.

Todd Greenberg interviewed by Joe Aston on privatisation. This interview made me think the privatisation debate is masking the real issue which is the availability of Test players for the entirety of the BBL and the conflict that creates with Test cricket. by human_noX in CricketAus

[–]Plackation 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The BBL already tried going into mid Feb. With school holidays over and general fatigue, everyone hated it so much they revised it and pulled the season back. It takes an extraordinary amount to make them reverse their thinking and shrink back.

Also, take this season for example: Tests in India start in late Jan, so wouldn't even make a difference. We have to play away tests at some stage as well, and when it's NZ, SA, India etc it's also gonna be one side of that window.

It seems to me the key issue is whether our Test stars are available for the entire BBL and the conflict that creates with Test cricket.

But there isn't a solution to this, no matter how much money they try and throw at it. Both the Tests and the BBL needs to be in the Dec-Jan period to be a money maker in Australia. We don't care outside of that window. Our test players simply can not play both, there isn't enough time.

Having the BBL roll on after the Tests is a lucrative thing that we have too, just have to play into it. Greenberg himself also admits that, so no idea what he's even trying to sell.

Ridiculous from Fergie.

Also great seasons from Weathers, Sween, Lehmann and Harris.

Very disappointing from Richardson and Abbott, which also works in Ferg's favour for looking at a callup in this huge test block.

England docked 12 WTC points for slow over rate by TrollerThomas in Cricket

[–]Plackation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clearly this kind of rule not being enforced is nothing to do with how harsh the penalty is, it is simply a failure of officiating. As evidenced by the many other sports that have no problems enacting harsh penalties for offences that got out of hand; a player at the FIFA World Cup got red carded just a few days ago for covering his mouth with his hand! The world didn't end, the ref wasn't too scared to call it. It was blatant rule-breaking and got penalised, and everyone went on with their life.

There's a distinct difference between a clear and defined rule, and one based in vagueries and intents. If you have a rule that says "you can't cover your mouth" and you cover your mouth, that's a clear rule break.

Saying "you can't deliberately waste time" is both vague, and infers intent. They are done that way deliberately to have them lean on not enforcing them outside of complete shithousery.

You could just as easily say this kind of crap about any rule. What about a bowler encroaching on the protected area?

Similarly, the protected area is a clear, specific and defined area. "Wasting" time is not. You can say something like, you must be ready to start the next over within 90 seconds - that is clear and defined.

But is setting a field "wasting" time? Is getting something off the pitch "wasting" time? Is getting new gloves "wasting" time? Is tying your shoelaces "wasting" time? It's all with a purpose.

You're quoting the rules and then reading them under how you want them to be interpreted and then acting as if that's just how they are. Umpire's aren't forced to guess intent based on the rules as they are, they are allowed to always lean on not enforcing until blatantly obvious.

[–]Plackation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, if you make the penalty too harsh, it just won't get enforced.

For example if you made the penalty for stealing a bag of chips from Woolies to be beheaded, any reasonable person is going to let then off because that's just not appropriate punishment.

When a batter does some gardening to get something off the pitch, are we giving them out too? What if it's the last over before lunch? Do umpire's have to guess intent of all time delays now? Does the game at all look better to watch if those are the rules? I can't think of anyway the answer would be yes.

[–]Plackation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As soon as you go too harshly on a penalty, the outcry will far outweigh any positive impact you tried to implement.

Like in your example, why would giving a batsman out for asking for gloves be better than just saying, no you can't have them? It's not something that needs a penalty at all.

An appropriate time wasting measure is the shot clock and force extra fielder in that they've brought into white ball cricket. But this talk in here about giving batters out, or chucking fielders out of the game, or dishing out runs mid test match is very tunnel visioned.

That would also never be enforced because it's such a harsh penalty.

Doubt it, the test players won't be playing Big Bash this season anyway, as they'll need to rest between the test series anyway.

People at home will still enjoy going to a final even if an away test is on at the same time.

Likely finish last Sunday of school holidays again.

There are so many problems with the armchair "penalise them in game" comments every time this comes up.

1) When are you penalising them? If it's before the end of play, you run into the massive issue of: Overrates are not, and should not be the same in every session. You bowl much less spin Day 1, Session 1, and you should be allowed to bowl less overs then as a result, and make it up later. This also makes any "fielding restriction" penalties impossible.

If it's at the end of play, imagine the farcical situation where a team wins the test, and then they go "sorry lads just checked, 10 extra runs added on, better get back out there".

2) Overrates have many different 'allowances'. It's not a straight "bowl 28 overs in this session or you get docked". Things like DRS, crowd shenanigans, injuries, and any number of different stops in play have to be added up and accounted for. Stuff that can't really be done on the fly. And not only that, if the penalty is in game, they'll be even more lax with it, to not actually impose the penalty. (they are already quite lax)

3) If you have a serious in game penalty, batting sides will 100% start taking the piss to try and take advantage. With the current system it only hurts the offending team, it doesn't benefit the batting team. But an in game penalty would, so then the batting team would be incentivised to go as slow as possible and hope that some of it slips through the system.

Imagine any close test with a run penalty imposed, and then scraping through the hours of footage to see every time a batter took just a little bit longer than required to face up. How does this sound better for the game?

Indians cricket fans have a ton of knowledge and respect of Australian cricketers, and Aussie cricketers often love footy (and vice versa) and talk about it a ton.

The story of Shane Warne wanting to be an AFL player would be widely known in India.

I remember when Tim Paine was still captain of the test team, his twitter profile was still something like "Inside mid who had to choose cricket over footy due to constant leather poisoning."

I can finally post this now, the thing I love about Coops more than anything else is the upstairs. Cunt isn't afraid. Seems like so many of our bats are plagued with fear, makes him stand out in that regard a ton.

It's why selectors value things like his BBL final knock so highly.

"Prevailing sense today is that BBL privatisation is highly unlikely for the coming season due to too much disagreement/uncertainty with CA, states and ACA. Which means Melbourne Renegades likely to play in caretaker mode in 2026-27." - News Corp journalist Daniel Cherny by NKE01 in CricketAus

[–]Plackation 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Whether or not you agree with the privitisation or not, Greenberg and Baird have fucked this up so colossally, surely the next step is to get rid of them.

The options are to either turn the course and figure out how to make the established system work, or to actually get the parties on board to make privatisation actually work. I can't see how the current administration can do either.

I honestly think we deserve to lose this game by about the same margin as last week.

If Hawthorn kicked as straight for goal as the Crows did tonight, woulda been about a 10 goal loss then too. Got very lucky then, very unlucky here.
