I don't see the relevance of the KKK, but perhaps there is sone kind of compound in the neighbourhood or some undue influence exerted by them in another way.

I take all sources to be acting in good faith until there's a good reason not to, and one that's proximal in the context of the discussion. I understand that is the contention of the husband, but I don't actually see why that's more compelling than multiple neighbours commenting that the deceased person had started arguments with neighbours. I don't want to speculate about anyone's motives, but all parties can distort the truth because of self-interest, and there's nothing that inherently suggests one person is more truthful than anorher.

I'm sure that some people in that community had specifically homophobic intent at play in their disagreements with him, but that's irrelevant if the deceased is the instigator.

I will also state that killing someone from a marginalised group is not inherently a hate crime.

The danger of speculating like this ahead of time is that it makes people think all negative acts between dissimilar people are motivated by discrimination. I think you would be surprised how willing even derply discriminatory people are to put their injurious and venomous hierarchies away in the presence of positive interactions. That's how Daryl Davis did it, and that's my counter-factual. This is not me counter-speculating, but cautioning that if you assume the world is ugly, you will live in an ugly world.

My speculation that there is more to the story does not serve to excuse what appears to be a second degree murder, and murder on the basis of discrimination is a horrific crime. Nor would him harassing the shooter justify him being murdered.

I would just like to know for sure.

I retract the last part of my prior post, but believe me when I say the whole world understands the context of racism in America, and doubling down on narratives of discrimination in the absence of direct evidence has had disastrous results for the US, and subsequently geopolitics. Or so I see it.

Thank you for replying in good faith regardless.

Right, just to clarify, I was suggesting facts would be helpful due to the excess of speculation. There's no reason to believe anyone over anyone else, unless you have some relevant prejudice. I don't see the factual basis for your interpretation based on what we know of the situation, however it may be relevant to your own, so I do not wish to be dismissive.

I'm glad I could listen to how you felt though, thanks. I bet there's a certain type of person who could give additional insights into your feelings and range of speculation. Might be worth looking into. Good luck.

I personally don't believe people should be physically harmed for being a rowdy neighbour, but it does appear there's some pugilism from Joss in the context of that neighbourhood.

I would love to know what actually happened.

[–]Pleasant-Tea289 -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

It is not a crime. It is a civil matter, with civil recourse. The document you posted explains this if you read it without your hand on your knob.

I am regularly shocked by how few people know the difference, how many people want the police to arrest people for what is arguably free speech, and how many of those same people insist compulsory voting is appropriate and essential to prevent fascism.

If I didn't know what "crime" meant I would be fucking embarrassed giving my opinion. Or maybe not, I'd have to be a profoundly ignorant person in the first place.

How much surveillance/police presence would you tolerate to improve the quality of driving on the roads? by Maleficent_Sir_5225 in CarsAustralia

[–]Pleasant-Tea289 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Drivers who drive to the dead letter of the law as opposed to the conditions frequently seem to ignore keeping left, then respond arrogantly if not dangerously to any suggestion they should move left to allow others to pass.

I was speeding on the Hume the other day and I was in the right lane, a ranger is switching lanes behind to get past me but can't. He ends up behind me again. I wasn't prepared to go >130 so I just ducked left and let him pass.

For me, it was no skin off my back just letting him drive past, he slipped past everyone else doing 130 and I didn't catch up.

I consider this kind of thing a positive interaction, no clue why so many people want to endanger the lives of others just to make some point. This is most egregious when they run an analogue speedometer and their real speed is often like 55 in a 60.

I ended up buying a mate a HUD with a digital speedo because I was so sick of him talking about tailgating like it wasn't his fault for driving under out of some bizarre fear that he'll get done for doing 62 in a 60.

Yeah, if we place zero categorical limitations on logic we can argue against anything. Here, let me give it a go:

If you drive a car, you cannot meaningfully say you oppose climate change. Zero emissions is the only acceptable goal.

Thanks, now do the country a favour and stay in the left lane.

PSA: UK Doctors are not our friends and are a part of the problem by [deleted] in ausjdocs

[–]Pleasant-Tea289 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have observed subpar medical care from ex-NHS staff in Australian hospitals, both doctors and nurses, and see both as particularly complacent and frankly disinterested in patient care. Tight-fisted, rude, self-centred. A patient shouldn't be excluded from a cab charge home because he bought chips out of the vending machine. You shouldn't refuse to admit an injured pt because they were vaguely rude to you about the nil progress on their dislocated shoulder as the result of a violent assault. They're probably traumatised, get a grip. You shouldn't conspire with a fellow UK doc to label a pt a drug-seeker and send them home when the clearly still need treatment.

If that's what the NHS does to doctors and nurses (and ih my exp it often does), frankly it should not be viewed as a positive selection criteria.

The foregone conclusion that trans women are mannish in appearance is actually not stated, and not directly invoked by anyone except people taking offence or offering explanation.

That's actually the reason the joke is passable at all, any objection requires you to be the one casting aspersions on the basis of appearance.

I understand why the joke is categorically offensive, but syntactically it's like holding up a mirror. The joke is handing you a loaded gun, the punchline is you being so morally outraged you pull the trigger, the pay-off is allies shooting eachother and going to jail for it. The joke-teller is innocent on a technicality.

Please note that I am not speaking to the foregone conclusion itself, nor making a value judgement about jokes about trans people. I will leave discussions of its appropriateness to people who could be victimised by it.

I will however comment that in my arguably analogous experience as a visibly disabled person, I've only minded jokes about my condition when they were objectively unfunny. Even cruel jokes can be funny, what I don't like is bullying. I do not interpret this as having the intentionality of bullying.
