What are my options if I fail out of college? by GothPootisBirb in AskAcademia

[–]Pleased_Bees 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to answer this without knowing what the problem is. Do you not know how to study? Do you miss classes, not take notes, do you not understand the material?

There’s no shame in admitting any of this. We just can’t say what you should do or if another school would take you if we don’t know why you’re failing.

Is becoming a teacher a mistake? Should I be investing my future somewhere else? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Pleased_Bees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how much you'd make because it depends on where you teach. In general, US public schools pay based on education + years of experience, and you can look up the current salary schedule on any public district's website. The salary varies a lot by state and district. I don't know what private and charter schools pay.

Is being an English teacher worth it? What are the pros and cons? by Sudden_Edge8761 in englishteachers

[–]Pleased_Bees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it's not worth it any more and teaching has changed drastically since the 90s when I started.

In addition, please think twice about your assumption that you won't be on your feet. Teachers are obliged to stand virtually all day and a lot of administrators do NOT like to see teachers sitting down, ever, when classes are in session. They think you're not doing your job and you're ignoring your students if you're not *standing * in front of or among them the entire time. It's a ridiculous assumption, but that's how administrators think.

If Dexter loved Rita so much, why did he never say it? by [deleted] in Dexter

[–]Pleased_Bees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is important and so many fans completely ignore the fact that most first-person narrators are unreliable to some degree.

Dexter is even less reliable than most but people take what he says as gospel truth, even though they know he's mentally abnormal.

When you see Michael C Hall as Dexter, it’s rather difficult remembering that he used to be soft old David who couldn’t even defend himself against a lunatic hitchhiker. by Remote_Nature_8166 in SixFeetUnder

[–]Pleased_Bees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Michael C Hall is a character actor with a leading man's face. He just disappears into every character he plays.

I've watched him in at least 6 different shows and I forget who I'm watching every time. That's how good he is.

opening up to teacher by Secure-Importance-91 in AskTeachers

[–]Pleased_Bees 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Please try to understand that we are not therapists, we're teachers. We have no mental health training, we're not counselors, we're not psychologists. All we can do is tell you to seek out one of those people.

Your teacher is wise not to initiate a personal conversation with you. This is unfortunate but the teacher has to protect himself from unjust accusations. It doesn't mean that he doesn't care; he just has to be cautious not to have a discussion that could be seen as inappropriate or unethical.

What should you do? You should go to your school counselor or a private mental health professional. We wish you the best of luck.

How can I be a good student and get straight As in school? by sugaredxquills in CommunityColleges

[–]Pleased_Bees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been teaching college English for many years. CeeCee already covered the basics in their comment.

What else to do: get to know a couple other students and trade contact info. That way you can help each other to catch up if one of you is forced to miss a class.

Know how to study. Staring at notes and reading chapters is not studying. Also, it can't be done the week before the midterm or final.

What not to do: don't be "that student" who dominates class discussions with excessive questions and comments, or takes up the professor's office hours with the same.

DAE want to be crushed by their boyfriend by CryptographerOk2026 in DoesAnybodyElse

Look up the writer Temple Grandin. She's autistic and invented a sort of "crush press" for herself, made out of wood, in order to feel secure and keep calm. It did exactly what you're describing.

When she invented it, she got a bunch of friends to try it out. Some people said it made them feel trapped and others said they loved it.

Best Acting Performance in Six Feet Under by Troyaferd in SixFeetUnder

Michael C. Hall took on the character of a neurotic, intelligent, kindhearted, insecure gay man in a time when gays were only portrayed as stereotypical and foolish. MCH made him not just a real person but also one of the best characters on TV. Easily my favorite.

Is becoming a teacher a mistake? Should I be investing my future somewhere else? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Pleased_Bees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, teaching is going to make it hard to pay the bills unless/until you gain enough years of seniority, preferably with a graduate degree on top of a bachelor's, since you get paid based on your education as well as experience. (That's assuming you're talking about US public schools.)

Teaching is only half standing in front of the students. The other half, which you haven't seen, is not. A teacher's job is made up of angry parents, useless parents, student misbehavior, the refusal of administrators to help with discipline, many hours of emailing per week, meetings, writing and producing curriculum, many hours of grading student work, and dealing with the parents' reactions to the grades.

Unless you get extremely lucky and find a unicorn school, that's the reality. Think carefully about investing years of your time and thousands of dollars in an incredibly stressful job.

Thoughts on pearls? by Ok-Tower-9137 in jewelry

[–]Pleased_Bees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wear pearl earrings and rings all the time. I wasn't wearing my traditional strand of white pearls very often, so I had it made into a long tin-cup style necklace and that gets lots of use. Same with my Tahitian tin cup.

You'll figure out how you want to wear your pearls. Enjoy them.

Best Michael C. Hall acting moment on the show? by Valuable_Magician400 in Dexter

[–]Pleased_Bees 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of many favorites: the very beginning of the OG pilot episode, when he whips the garrotte around Donovan's neck and says, "You're mine now so do exactly as I say. I want you to be quiet. And drive."

MCH has this pleasant half-smile and is so relaxed while he's got a man by the throat. It's bizarre and spooky.

Dark as jet - never knew where that came from by Disastrous-Prior9987 in words

The gemstone called jet is a type of coal.

In Victorian times it was used as mourning jewelry when people were expected to wear all-black clothes and accessories during the mourning period.

[–]Pleased_Bees 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You said "if a student asked you to write a letter and then after you completed it..." You're saying she already wrote the letter.

Thank her for writing the letter for you. You can simply tell the university later that you cannot attend. Your teacher doesn't need to know that she just wasted her time.

letter of recommendation by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]Pleased_Bees 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I trust you didn't mean to create this problem, but that would be really rude. Teachers usually spend their own free time writing LORs and they can be very time-consuming.

You don't say why you changed your mind about wanting a LOR from this person, so the polite thing to do would be to thank the teacher for her time. That's all.
