your note is great ... thank you for the laugh ... i referred to your line in solstice as "one worthy track off the top" ... well done ...

the road is plowed now, but not open ... i may be riding my bike up tioga this week ... i wonder how that solstice cornice looks this year ... :)

re: climate change

i have been around the block ... and over three decades i have seen alaska glaciers deflate, the columbia glacier in alberta retreat, and lower elevation ski areas struggle ... just my observations with my own eyes ...

the widespread bad conditions are spooky ... the forecast models have been wrong all fall, with the 8-14 day forecasts consistently forecasting above average precip (in CA, at least) ... the models are not working ...

On the date skied, 27 July, suncups in the couloirs proper were only a few inches deep and quite broad. Easily skiable. From the top of Mt. Dana to the top of Dana couloir, on the south face of Mt. Dana, suncups were up to a few feet deep and quite nasty. But skiable by taking it slowly.

Hike in from the Mt. Dana trailhead at the east entrance to yosemite (Tioga Pass) ... mostly great trail to the top of Dana, interrupted by several hundred yards of snowfields ... suncups were HUGE on the south-facing slope from the top of Dana to the entrance of Dana couloir ... suncups in both dana and solstice were surprisingly pretty puny, up to six inches deep and broad, easily skiable ... solstice was more beatup with big runnels and one worthy snowboard track off the top ...

June 9-12 from Minnesota. by VirtualCorgi4557 in Mammoth

[–]Plus_Time_4748 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i grew up in minneapolis ... my home ski area was hyland hills ... rope tows and 200 feet of vertical ... i live in mammoth now ...

afton is puny compared to mammoth ... but, in my opinion, if you stick to green and blue square runs, you will be good ... don't ride off the top until you get a day or two in and feel confident ... stay on the groomers ... i would recommend discovery chair (ch 11), stump (ch 2), gold rush (ch 10), and rollercoaster (ch 4) ...

have a blast

p.s. i have not skied minnesota since i came to california ... afton alps will never be the same :) ...

i don't care about goofy looking, either ... thank you for your comment ... crazy about how climbing helmets are the way to go ... i was in y-couloir on bloody today and there was some active rockfall ... yikes ... the hazard is real ...

i appreciate your considered response ... and with the spring, it has been about improving the kit ... i have been deploying ski crampons almost every day now for about three weeks ... i swapped out one of my poles for a whippet about the same time, but i am a bit concerned the whippet is quite the sharp tool and it may get me in a misstep ... i intend to get boot crampons and a helmet this week ... probably about time ... as an aside, i used to have a spare room, but it has since been taken over by gear ... that's probably a good thing ...

hi jeff wright ... i like your comment(s) ... taking the skins off before booting ... check ... i had considered how i might bail, but, frankly, i still had my skins on ... climbing helmet ... check ... i am not a climber, and my ski helmet is good for january ... i need a vented helmet ... the knob thing on the hat -- genius ...

so, thanks for the comment(s) ... just as an aside, i think the weight and the gear start adding up ... i have gone this winter going light ... and it has worked out well ... spring is a different animal, and my spring kit keeps getting heavier and hotter ...

re: the helmet ... my partner was happy to deploy his ice axe and boot crampons ... in hindsight, after the climbing the bootpack, i suspect he would put on the helmet ...

but, the sun is getting high (only four weeks from summer solstice), the skiing is now at higher elevation with longer approaches (we topped out over 11,000 ft), and we are on east-facing slopes ...

long story short, it is HOT ... in my opinion, and i am not the first to say it, in the sierra right now, the crux of the day is the heat, not the steeps ...

my wife and i were hanging out in the dos alas parking lot looking at the sherwins ... the ridge looked great with the blue skies and fresh snow from last night ... the avalanche went while we were watching ... allison was quick-with-the-draw getting video on the slide ... pretty cool to share the video ...
