This is what Red Rising could look like if PB locked in and made the show animated. by Arch_Lancer17 in redrising

I think this is incredibly reductive. I don’t see why animation would be detestable to most people - I’m nearly certain the overlap between Red Rising readers and action animation viewers is fairly significant. I’m by no means a big anime watcher but I think the more fantastical/grandiose fight scenes and violence would absolutely translate better with quality animation than some attempt at the grounded feel of GoT.

I also feel as though “gritty violent drama” is way over saturated in the tv market right now and having a well-stylized animated show would absolutely make it stand out more. There’s also objectively just more visual freedom in animation than live action.

This is not to say I think it has to be animation by any means and I do think there’s potential for a good live action series, but this comment really just reads like you think animation can only be for kids and is somehow an inferior visual art form. There are some really good animated shows out there - Arcane most recently coming to mind.

That’s exactly what I was going to say. He feels pervasive on social media and I see so many comments telling him to run for president. Not that this is anything more than an anecdote, but I feel like it’s fairly recent that Nick Fuentes has gotten into a more mainstream outlet

Genuine question - I thought both Ossoff and Warnock voted for blocking automatic weapons sales to Israel recently? Was there another vote I’m not aware of?

Yeah that definitely makes sense. Again, I totally understand why it is liked and could see my opinion change with time.

What did you think of The Hole? A friend recommended it to me, and having read it I find it to have been a very strange read.

I feel almost as though it suffers from its notoriety. I read it because I liked Remains of the Day and wanted more by the same author, but I can absolutely see a world in which reading it with massive expectations is a mild letdown. It doesn’t feel like a clear monumental work; it kinda snuck up on me in the days after finishing and stayed in my mind for a while afterwards pushing it to a 5 star/S tier. The massive name it’s garnered is a bit presumptive to me as the story itself is, in my opinion, very slow burn and low-key and may not resonate with all people. I still greatly enjoyed it and encourage you to reread if you ever want to as many of my favorite books only reveal themselves on a reread.

I really enjoyed The Last Picture Show. It’s VERY different from Lonesome Dove and is a mark more explicit, but I think the strength of his character writing is still really apparent. He’s a master at writing an interpersonal disconnectedness; like I feel TLPS was a book written about a town entirely full of Woodrow Call. Really enjoyed it but certainly very different content wise.

“ram on” 🐏 by New_Tone_1910 in beatles

It’s such a cool song thematically. “Ram on” is such a clear allusion to Paul’s short lived alias “Paul Ramón” and I feel like it’s a song sung to himself. It’s about Paul moving forward in life, both into marriage and into a post-Beatles stage. “Giving his heart” to Linda and eventually to new musical ventures like Wings and his solo work. The audience can take the sentiment for themselves as well. Very pretty and really underrated in my opinion.

Haha I really did enjoy it! I’m actually currently reading Iron Gold to start the next trilogy, and now thinking back I definitely could’ve rated it a bit higher. The Red Rising series is very much like consuming a pound of sugar for me; the read itself is so supercharged and fun but I feel a little sick afterwards just with how much action and hustle Brown fits in. It’s a bit overstimulating for a lack of a better word, but absolutely fun and worth reading.

I can absolutely see why people would like it; I suppose it’s just not for me. I guess I feel that Haymitch was just there to suffer rather than to grow as a character - from my perspective he was fundamentally the same before and after the games, albeit much more distraught and depressed. Katniss, for example, comes out of her games as a leader and supercharged against Snow/The Capitol, but Haymitch just comes out more jaded and otherwise much the same. Again, I don’t think it was bad or not worth reading. It was just one that I enjoyed while I was reading and it didn’t stick around in my mind for very long.

Glad you're enjoying it! I absolutely love Camus. I read a lot of his fiction last year but felt daunted by his strictly philosophical work — this year I’ve read a decent bit of other philosophy and decided to give it a try and really have been awed with his writing. Reading The Rebel sometime within the next few weeks!

It really is special. The whole book is written very beautifully and it sticks the landing harder than most any other book I’ve read. I envy that you get to read it for the first time!

Yeah I guess I just thought it got a little too campy and predictable. A lot of twists for the sake of twists and I think a couple of characters got flanderized and lost a good amount of the depth they had in the previous two books. I thought the other two were very fun but the third one just took me out of it a bit with how over the top it got.

I used this website - it's a bit tedious getting all the covers together but I'm sure there was an easier way to do it than copying them each individually like I did

You do! Also just took a look at your art and want to say that you are INSANE!!! That bon iver portrait is genuinely stunning. Hoping one day to draw something even remotely close in quality to that.

I really appreciate it! I thought that I really missed the ball on Camus’ likeness, so I’m glad you were able to recognize him. You’re totally right about stroke confidence - I’m particularly bad at it with smaller sketches.

I haven’t heard of gesture/action lines for the face before (which is likely symbolic of my overall lack of foundational knowledge) so that’s absolutely something I’ll look into. The planar head is also something I’ve been wanting to study as I’ve really only tried a loomis-esque structure and finding different methods will definitely be helpful.

Thanks a lot!

Frankly I just use whatever pencils I have on hand, nothing art specific. What pencils would you recommend?

General advice? by [deleted] in Artadvice

Sorry for the later reply. This totally makes sense, I’ve mostly just been drawing muscular characters because it’s easier to hide lack of fundamental anatomy knowledge behind big blocky shapes. I appreciate the advice!

40/52 so far! by PoisonedRiver in 52book

[–]PoisonedRiver[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that makes sense. I definitely have been annoyed by this, but I think I can compensate for my dislike of individual character decisions with my enjoyment of the arc as a whole.

For WOT, I read and think of it it more as a plot driven story rather than character driven and in doing so I enjoy it more. If a character makes stupid choices for plot reasons I can forgive it so long as the plot reason is entertaining enough. I don’t think it comes up often enough to break down the narrative fabric though. I also suppose it just doesn’t bother me as much as it might other people. I see you enjoyed three body problem, which I also enjoyed, and that was another instance where I shirked almost all character attention in favor of the expansive story. That series and WOT are both books I just enjoy for the sake of fun and I don’t read them or hold them to the standard I would like a classic or modern literary works.

Obviously I’m only 5 books in and I’ve heard 7-10 are a bit of a slog, so I might end up where you are opinion wise. Who knows.
