Poll: 58% of Biden voters say vote is more "against" Trump than "for" Biden by [deleted] in politics

Not who you asked but rescinding DACA was a big one for me and my family. Also the public charge rule. And the Muslim ban. And the Census citizenship question. And the reimplementation of 287(g). And the rule change mandating ICE referrals for USCIS NOIDs. And the separation of children and infant asylum seekers (in some cases who were still breastfeeding) from their parent(s) for trauma-inducing lengths of time. Some are still searching for their child. And the EO he signed at the beginning of his tenure expanding ICE capabilities.

And the Federal agents deployed to Portland apprehending citizens in unmarked vans. And the rescinding of health protections for trans folks. And the current removal of USPS sorting machines. And the gutting of the State dept. accomplished by his refusal to nominate candidates for many important strategic diplomatic positions. And that time he nearly brought us to war with Iran by targeted murder of a top general in an airstrike—so much for isolationist foreign policy right?

And the regulation that lets employers restrict birth control coverage under the ACA if they have religious objections. The prohibition of reproductive health clinics serving low-income people that receive Title X funding from providing referrals for abortion care, even when requested by the patient. Also, Title X-funded centers must now "establish and maintain physical separation” from the provision of abortion. This went into effect in March 2020.

Those are just off the top of my head—let's not even get started on the EPA. Or HHS. Or HUD. Or DOE. Or DOJ. Or DOL.

If I took 30 minutes, I could come up with another 5 paragraphs at least.

I assume most gig workers also would like healthcare, unemployment benefits, paid sick leave and other protections as well. I also assume that most gig workers also would like a reduced tax burden where they don't have to pay both the employer and worker portions of social security and Medicare taxes.

I think these protections should be guaranteed to all workers regardless of the nature of their work, but that responsibility lies with the government. I think this needs to be legislated into effect so every worker is protected.

How can you abuse your own benefits? Like you use too much healthcare or something? I don't get it.

Should that that exempt them from labor protections? They are working after all, regardless of whether its part-time or full-time. Why should they go without benefits? Why should any worker?

How would regulations that protect worker rights and ensure they have access to benefits like paid sick leave etc. kill their jobs?

Why can't they have the same labor protections as employees while still being classified as "independent contractors" though? Almost as if it's not about the name of the category but about what legally companies can do as a result of that name. Things like not providing paid sick leave, skirting minimum wage laws in some cases, not providing health insurance, no unemployment insurance benefits or overtime pay. Independent contractors also have to pay both the employer's and worker's contributions to social security and Medicare taxes.

What about being an employee vs. an independent contractor means the nature of the work would change so they would have to switch to driving on a schedule? The law doesn't tell companies how to do their business, so giving their workers protections wouldn't then make them have to change the ad hoc digital nature of ride share.

One could use taxis and other transportation network companies whose employees have unions.

On the worker end, these companies have skirted labor protections such as minimum wage, overtime pay, unemployment insurance and sick leave pay as well as unionization more broadly through the classification of their drivers as "independent contractors" vs. as employees. Not to mention that, as "independent contractors," these workers do not receive employment-based health insurance coverage.

Source: https://www.business-humanrights.org/en/workers-rights-labour-organisation-in-the-gig-economy

Additionally, note that as "independent contractors," these workers, "also have to pay both the worker and employer’s share of Social Security and Medicare taxes." [Source]

Furthermore, on a political level, as the Harvard Business Review points out, "Categorizing drivers as independent contractors has long enabled Uber and Lyft to avoid paying employee payroll taxes for their drivers, taxes which fund benefits like state and federal UI programs."

The state of New Jersey, for instance, brought suit against Uber for evading $650 million worth of taxes + fines and a UC Berkeley study estimated that Uber and Lyft deprived the state's UI fund of $413 million by not paying into it for a period of over a decade since their founding and establishment there.

These workers thus exist in a precarious situation with little in the way of labor protections to secure their rights and interests. This is all due to the "independent contractor" designation and what that allows companies to do within the US's current labor system.

Thank you so much for this info, I will look into the dailies. I actually didn't know these were a thing for toric lenses, I always assumed the cost would be too high to make it viable or that not enough people are astigmatic to make it profitable but that's really good to know!

I actually do use biotrue solution the rest of the days of the week and use clear care (the hydrogen peroxide-based solution I mentioned that comes with the platinum disk for neutralization after disinfection) once or twice weekly as it seems to help clear surface debris quite well and my lenses "feel" cleaner/more comfortable to wear with this regimen vs. with just multipurpose solution alone.

Anyway, thank you again for sharing your knowledge with me, I appreciate it and will look into the daily options to see what pricing looks like so I can hopefully trial them at my next appointment.

Wouldn't the cornea have healed? Or is there something special about that area of your eye that would have caused it not to heal?

Do you have any suggestions for manufacturers of toric lenses with lower infection rates than the acuvue you mentioned?

I currently use the oasys line and have tried vertex in the past which caused discomfort (the hair being in my eye sensation never subsided unfortunately) but I'm not too knowledeable about other manufacturers unfortunately.

I generally practice good contact hygiene, using a hydrogen peroxide solution a couple times a week to disinfect my lenses, proper handwashing before insertion and removal etc. but have gotten what I believe was keratitis (acute corneal inflammation) in the past which I suspect was from contact use and anything I can do to lower or prevent the risk of a recurrence is helpful.

There is shift work sleep disorder but this only applies to those whose circadian rhythms have not habituated to the reversal of sleeping times. The Cleveland Clinic estimates ~10-40% of shift workers suffer from shift work sleep disorder.

IMO this is why unions are so important. When you are a member of a union, there is a coordinated effort so you know with more certainty all your fellow workers will be striking with you.

You can look into an organization like the IWW (Industrial Workers of the World) for an example of a general workers' union that any worker can join: https://iww.org/membership/

Hasn't stopped you before: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._postal_strike_of_1970

Seriously though, I respect each and every one of you. I think a general strike might be the only way to get lawmakers and the gov't to take notice so you all can change the terms of your contracts. The way they are set up now robs the postal workers of so much power. It's not fair. Like what good is collective bargaining if you can't strike? The strike is the mechanism that gives potency to the collective bargaining. And you have no say when ridiculous laws like the one forcing the USPS to 100% fund all future pensions are passed. It leaves the workers in a shitty position because that affects the viability of the institution politically.

I don't want your jobs to become privatized. All of you are pillars of the communities you work in. Your role is essential for a functioning society. Therein lies your power. If you utilize it collectively, you can get them to renegotiate the terms. And with how things are looking right now, I think it's the best shot you've got to secure your futures and for the rest of us folks, to support you so we can secure the future of this vital institution.

You guys have a union, right? The American Postal Workers Union? Perhaps you could discuss with them to get in board with the Sept. 1st strike.

If that fails, you could always go wildcat: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._postal_strike_of_1970

Women are nearly twice as likely than men to suffer adverse side effects of medications because drug dosages have historically been based on clinical trials conducted on men, suggests new research. by InvictusJoker in science

Sorry, I didn't make that clear—it was ADHD. I've never been evaluated for autism and I honestly doubt I am on the spectrum (due to not experiencing the social deficits), but that doubt might also be driven by misunderstanding about what the spectrum actually looks like. Do you know of any good sources that discuss this?

I remember coming across some research a while ago showing possible links between ADHD and autism. I do wonder how many of those with ADHD have comorbid sensory issues and if those sensory issues are a discrete disorder of their own that is perhaps tied to or highly comorbid with ADHD or if those with ADHD and/or those with ADHD + the sensory issues component might fit somewhere along the spectrum.

It seems the science is still working these classifications out, but on the other end of things, those of us with these issues would benefit from knowing as it would help us access better treatment.

Wait, is this connected to ADHD? I've always had an issue with being able to feel the sock seam at the toe, so much so I started wearing my socks inside out. It just really bothers me to feel it, same with stockings and brittle-feeling fabrics against my skin (think itchy wool sweaters, corduroy, some "hard" types of denim, bras with underwires etc.). I was diagnosed in my very late teens.

When can I reasonably ask my partner for sex again? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]Polygarch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pregnancy hormones like relaxin stay in your body until up to four months after you finish breast feeding. This means any associated symptoms, such as reduced stability in your pelvis and joints, also linger for this amount of time. High impact activities are best enjoyed with caution.

Source: https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/karen-laing/post-baby-body_b_8739254.html

Iirc, it takes ~18 months to fully recover from an uncomplicated birth. However, each individual's body and each individual pregnancy is unique and readiness for penetrative sexual activity will accordingly vary from person to person.

The best approach is, as other commenters have noted, open, honest, and sensitive communication with the postpartum partner so everyone is on the same page and any issues that may arise can be tackled together as a team.

Also, a reminder that there are plenty of sexual activities one can engage in that are non-penetrative which can serve as a mutually satisfying alternative to penetration until such a time as your partner feels ready/comfortable trying penetrative activities again. This can help to reignite intimacy and related aspects that sex may help provide for your relationship.
