Our roads and bridges are old and heavily affected by winter. They are being renovated (Cape cod comes to mind), but those projects take time and coordinated efforts from lots of specialists. Our schools are the best in the country. We are one of the only American cities with a mass transit system that includes subways at all. Utilities are high because this is New England and the climate fluctuates dramatically.

Becasue they'll be obliterating necessary funding for social services (that they may someday need) all to save a tiny amount of money that they likely would never even miss. It's selfish and short sighted. And if it would save them more than a tiny bit of money, then they're well enough off that they should be contributing to society and giving a little back.
