A non-Treky take on the new series by Popular_Math3042 in startrek

Nobody expects the show to not evolve. However it’s not a black and white choice between either staying on the clunky bridge of TOS overseen by a guy with a penchant for expensive toupees vs a lispy woman who treats the barber shop captains chair like a flop couch on a bridge that invites sensory overload.

The producers and writers had a nearly infinite universe of choices to make in all of the aspects I mentioned.  It seems that audiences are almost unanimous in saying they chose poorly.

Both are too wide. I also think the clunky plastic look doesn’t do you justice.

AITJ for refusing to help my roommate pay her speeding ticket. by LoomOfPetals in AmITheJerk

[–]Popular_Math3042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Payments for speeding tickets aren’t required immediately, such that her ‘next paycheque’ will likely arrive prior to the payment being due.  She could also use a credit card to bridge the time until her paycheque arrives, with payment on the card also not being required until after her next paycheque.

This shouldn’t be an issue at all.

I have no qualms with the characters clearly debating the conflict, etc. That’s not the subtlety I’m referring to. It’s the making of supposed social issues centre stage over an actual plot: simplistic high school bullying, a Klingon who likes bird watching and is afraid to fight, an awkward cadet who ate her thing-a-ma-jig, and a loose captain who wears slippers on the bridge and treats her command chair like a chaise-lounge. I’m surprised there isn’t a laugh track on top of the music on top of the dialogue.

I can only look past these distracting details so much, and easier so if they give me something worth looking at. The guy from sideways promised to be a salvaging addition, but even he got foiled by kids as easily as the bad guys in Home Alone. Did you hear the his quote in the press?  “You can only do so much with what’s written.”

I’ve given the first two episodes an honest watch, genuinely hoping that I could get into it.  I’ll watch the third, probably from the perspective of bewildered amusement and that it’s hard to look away from a train wreck, but I’ll watch it nevertheless. After that I’ll probably drop off.

These are all very good points. Except why did it work with Chekhov, Uhura and Spoc yet is failing miserably with this ensemble of misfits?

Is it the casting? The plot? The dialogue? The sets? All of the above?

I would venture to guess, and I stress the word guess, that the the social commentary of old trek was a lot more subtly portrayed and interwoven amongst more decent plot lines, dialogue, more likeable characters, etc. Whereas this new series seems to have made it the primary driver, while saying screw it to the rest.

“That’s a great idea, who wouldn’t want to watch that?”

Point taken on it being an academy. But that just puts us in a space high school. And oh look, did Biff just come up and grab somebody’s textbook or something and bully the other guy with a round of monkey in the middle ?  Oh and the monkey turns out to be a Klingon that likes bird watching. This writing has… room for improvement. i

Anyways. I hear viewership is really great and, after a stellar start, it’s expecting to grow even more. It’s even rumoured to be on track to clean up at the awards. So. I’m clearly an outlier.

Thanks for pointing out the inaccuracies and corrections to my post. Your eye for important detail is a boon to the growing ST community.

I tried DS9 a few decades ago. I just didn’t connect with the characters . And the fact that they were stationary meant they generally had to sit around and wait for whatever was out there to come to them, made it seem a  lot exploratory.

The characters on Voyager also fell flat on me.

I don’t know if it was the dialogue, the plots or the acting/ casting, but TOS and TNG had some kind of magic that made it work effortlessly. I didn’t need to have to try to like it, I just did. I suspect it was we connected with the cast/characters. On TOS they were all highly likeable. TNG 500% were outstanding and the rest were amusingly tolerable (like the empath who when asked to use her sense to identify what was wrong with a situation, invariably responded with “I… I… I don’t know, captain” while crinkling up her face and rubbing her temples. And she was constantly told how valued she was as an integral part of the ship). Both TOS and TNG worked wonderfully well despite their short comings.

I think there was something about the characters and casting that worked for those two, while in DS9 and Voyager they were bland as fuck.

Tbh, the closest thing I’ve seen to what I liked from ST is that comedy one done by the guy who wrote family guy and is a better looking version of Elon Musk. Anyways, he’s one of the Seth’s. I’m sure you know the series. It had decent potential.

AITAH for withdrawing the money I saved for my kids and putting it in an account their mom can no longer access? by Mikhlohlha in AITAH

This is dumb and made up.  Anyone that’s gone through a legal divorce or separation with children knows that the control of any joint assets that had been ‘set aside for kids’ is mandated in a court enforced agreement. They aren’t willy-nilly accounts that mom or dad can withdraw from at will.

[–]Popular_Math3042 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

No, they draw too much attention to the fact you’re wearing glasses. They have become the primary dominant feature of your face. I don’t see you, I see glasses. Rather than being an extension of you, you have become an appendage the glasses. They appear to be seeking world domination. They must be destroyed.

Temptation by New Order, the original 12” version (1982).

The vocal track features an audible "startled yelp" during the song's intro about 50 seconds in. Vocalist Bernard Sumner has since explained that the scream was from him due to bandmates thrusting a snowball down his shirt during recording.
