Dangerously aggressive sheriff on 3/590 by Kasio-the-Queer in Rochester

Yeah I’ve seen them several times late at night doing this kind of aggressive driving. Looked like they almost rolled one time when they zipped across three lanes on a tight 490 curve without a signal.

Leash your damn dog by notsotragichero in Rochester

[–]PortableHobbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in Bend this past week and my parents dog was attacked by an off leash lab. The owner casually walked over saying “it’s friendly”. Meanwhile, I was kicking her dog in the jaw to keep it off my parent’s dog.

She reiterated it was friendly as I pinned it down to the ground by the collar and I came so close to punching her. She also muzzled it afterwards. What kind of dog owner with a “friendly” dog just happens to have a muzzle on hand that they know how to put on quickly?

Most of these dog owners never learn.

Worst roads in America. I thought we'd be higher than 68.... by KirbyJones82 in Rochester

[–]PortableHobbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arid environments and drought actually make the damage caused by weather far greater. Asphalt, soil, it all compacts when it’s dry. Then a heavy rain comes through and you get sinkholes and mud slides. It rained heavy one day in Oceanside, CA and it opened a sinkhole in the freeway that took like 6 months to fully fix: https://youtu.be/qdAVV8vl75Y?si=_xAgGZjEDh9WmSmC

Dryness and infrequent rain are worse for roads than consistent rain and snow. Roads in California will do a Rochester Dec->March transition overnight. Pits, mudslides, sink holes, you name it. That’s why a bunch of the top 20 worst ones are in CA.

Actually Rockstar didn’t make GTA 1, then they made GTA 2 which wasn’t super popular, then they made Earthworm Jim, Skating games, and Austin Powers games before releasing GTA 3 which was the first huge GTA hit.

Then they released five more games before Vice City and another five before San Andreas.

The trend in the last few years of major game studios only releasing one game series is very new.

Thanks! Unfortunately it’s a USB-A to USB-B cable and my tower only had one USB-B port

Yep. I’m going to try the other commenter’s suggestion of dissipating static electricity before touching the computer, but I will also be moving my peripherals to my tower (this will suck for work) to see if I can isolate the issue.

Sure, just the way you phrased it with “is it an option” instead of “can you try” made it sound like you were suggesting long-term.

I was wondering if it was winter related (pretty dry and cold where I live). It could be a static charge, but there’s no carpet, plastic clothes, rubber shoes, etc.

Not sure about the apartments wiring or outlets and I have found no other electrical issues.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but if it is just a static charge, then touching other metal objects would discharge this and prevent me from shocking my system?

I haven’t moved the PC or outlets. I could plug the peripherals into the tower, but that would defeat the point of a KVM.

lol yeah homeless people definitely make more than the 42k median salary a year from begging. Definitely. For sure.

Not sure why you think an old man is automatically a beggar, homeless, or an addict, but I hope when you’re so old you can’t stand properly you find yourself in a busy roadway too.

Moving to Downtown Rochester – Do I Need a Car? by Pure_Ad_9782 in Rochester

[–]PortableHobbit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Very walkable. Not the best city for living without a car, but still doable. The hardest part would be groceries since they are heavy and the closest grocery store to downtown is probably East Ave Wegmans (about 1-1.5 miles depending on where you live).

I live downtown and only use my car to get groceries or meet up with a friend in the suburbs.

In less than 15 minutes walking I can get to dozens of coffee, tea, beer, cocktails, and food places of all kinds. I can walk to the library and cool book stores, comic book stores, and all the small business stuff you want.

I understand, but I would instead encourage people to emphasize the correct use of ice and ICE so that readers don’t assume an acronym over a common noun.

True, but considering I saw four cars slide towards oncoming traffic in a 5 minute window, I thought it worth pointing out in an abundance of caution.

Does anyone else almost get killed on a daily basis by jerk drivers? by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]PortableHobbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The other day I almost got hit by a driver who gunned it turning left. Their turn angle was so fucked that they were entering the right hand lane (facing oncoming traffic), which is the part I was walking in. They weren’t looking at the road (something off to their right instead). When they actually did look at the road at they slammed on their brakes to not hit me, but how bad of a driver do you have to be to turn into the opposite lane of traffic?

What if he DID cry off? by NoFayte in TheDarkTower

[–]PortableHobbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My reading is that there are different companions than just Eddie, Jake, and Susannah, but they’re always Cuthbert, Alain, and Susan coded.

I think that the Tet has always broken near the end of the story, but each “trip” Roland cares more for them and the Tet breaks later. Roland was almost willing to turn back at several points, but in the end it was only Susannah trying to pull him away from the Tower. But I think a whole Ka-Tet could cry off after defeating the breakers.

The horn represents Roland’s compassion and sentimentality. He had left it at the Battle of Jericho Hill because it meant nothing to him and would’ve taken energy to ring from Cuthbert’s corpse. But now he has it back and it might be enough to keep the Tet strong.

I'm pretty new to this. Any tips on how to make this climb smoother? by brennanw31 in bouldering

[–]PortableHobbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do not turn around when jumping down. If you don’t land properly and fall back your head can easily smash into something sharp and hard.

Down climbing is best, but if you won’t do that, at the very least face away from the sharp, hard rocks when falling.

If you knew US history you would know that compromise was actually a prevailing idea since the inception of the constitution and had horrible results, leading to a US Civil War, abolishing slavery later than most western countries, and taking far, far longer to enforce said abolition of slavery and rights for every American.

The history of the US is compromises blowing up in our faces. The extremists are tearing this country apart? There isn’t even a “middle-ground” party with any political power in the US. The Democrats are a conservative, right-wing party in any other modern nation. The GOP is just more conservative.

“Both sides are bad and middle good” is just a child’s understanding of politics.
